Something I try to do is go by the byline, not the outlet. I'm not familiar with Leif Weatherby or Benjamin Recht, but this seems like a solid expose and if I had run across the Axios piece they're talking about, I doubt I would have dug into the source. NYT also hosts Bret Stephens' opinions. Does that mean that NYT is untrustworthy? Yes. Does that mean they publish nothing of value? I would say no. I don't think any news brandname deserves trust, since they can be bought and sold just like any brandname. People, especially journalists, can also be bought, but people tend to be much more protective of their public image than corporations, and that constrains them in helpful ways.
