She says we're not a multicultural country. I disagree.

How does she define culture? The usual way? Shared values, social behaviours, stories?

I can't think of a single common touchpoint that me and Kemi share - our values, our sense of what is considered an acceptable way to act, and I'd be very surprised if she grew up playing RPGs and watching anime.

I suspect the truth lies closer to the fact that the Tories need someone to blame. It used to be Jewish people, then it was black people and the Irish, now it's Muslims. It's always someone.

We've always been multicultural - even without immigration. We're a country made up of four distinct smaller countries. English isn't even the official national language - the only official language anywhere in the UK is Welsh.

As for a shared culture, I suspect I would have much more of a shared life experience with a 45 year old Software Developer from Sweden than I would a 70 year old Daily Mail reader from Cornwall.

I do like to think that younger voters get this, though. They're less easy to scare, and less easy to trick. Hopefully this recent result is a sign of things to come.

"we're not a multicutural country" - country that literally spent centuries going to other countries and colonising them to exploit their resources.

"we are a multiracial country, not a multicultural country", says someone whose culture obviously excludes all the cultures they're criticizing..

So, THEIR culture is the presumed "only valid" culture, then, of course..

Gaslighters gonna gaslight.

In England, classes are distinct cultures.

Nobody who's ignoring that has any validity in claiming that England isn't multi-cultural: it's multi-cultural vertically, & nobody with any intellectual-integrity would dispute that.

Horizontally, it's multi-cultural, too, as simply walking 'round in England will prove.

In England, different cultures definintely are not homogenous ( dad was Anglo-Indian, from India, & I lived in England back in the 1970's, & cultural-segregation was quite significant then: my English relatives were English, and not of Indian culture.

Even though dad was 1/2 & 1/2..

the prejudice among the Anglo-Indians was sufficient to keep Indian culture out from them, it seems..

we learn MUCH more in-relationship than we do in insularity, per day, right?

The same is true between cultures. )

False-framing doing its best to highjack another country..

This is why bottom-up is the most-accurate framing, & top-down ideological-framing the least-accurate.

This is why top-down machiavellianism invariably wrests control of countries from the people.

Always the "party" defining everything in ways that enforce conformity/homogeneousness, among what it "accepts" as "valid".

I think it was a German who told us Lemmites of the Americas that we either needed to get rid of parties or get LOTS more parties, & deal-with coalitions more..

I think they were right, now.

The few-parties paradigm just won't tolerate integrity to have any place in the political "market".

red and blue tories being like nah it couldn't be because people are sick of right wing governments; we've gotta turn up the dial marked racism.

Apparently the Muslim community turning out in large numbers to vote for white woman running for a party lead by a gay Jewish man is sectarian politics now. Good to know.

[-] als 4 points 3 months ago

When's someone gonna tell her that Muslim isn't a race but a religion with its own culture?

The nerve of a conservative to suggest that it's the greens of all people who are destroying tolerance.

The Conservatives were the ones building internment camps in another country and it's only due to their got an ineptitude that they didn't put anyone in them.

I also think it's hilarious that all of the parties keep bringing up drug legalisation, which for some bizarre reason they're all against, but because they know people are generally in favour of the legalisation of marijuana they have to use harder drugs to generate an air of legitimacy. Why don't they try having popular policies for once, you would have thought that would have been pretty obvious then maybe people would vote for them.

Yes, Charlotte embodies the new Conservative party, one that only manages 1.9% of the votes at an election.

[-] echodot@feddit.uk 1 points 3 months ago

How long do you think it'll be until we have to start giving them their deposit back?

We should start treating the conservatives with the level of relevance they deserve.

I honestly assumed this was fake and had to check multiple sources before I accepted that it's real. A shocking new low.

[-] DaiDactylos@feddit.uk 2 points 3 months ago

Fine sentiment from the leader of a party which lost their deposit, only narrowly coming out ahead of a candidate registered as Sir Oinks-a-lot (who I suspect actually had a more sensible policy platform).

[-] Womble@piefed.world 2 points 3 months ago

He certainly did! One of their flagship policies was to mandate that all primary schools are on at least the fourth floor of buildings, in order to raise standards in education.

General Discussion for politics in the UK.
Please don't post to both !uk_politics@feddit.uk and !unitedkingdom@feddit.uk .
Pick the most appropriate, and put it there.

Posts should be related to UK-centric politics, and should be either a link to a reputable news source for news, or a text post on this community.

Opinion pieces are also allowed, provided they are not misleading/misrepresented/drivel, and have proper sources.

If you think "reputable news source" needs some definition, by all means start a meta thread. (These things should be publicly discussed)

Posts should be manually submitted, not by bot. Link titles should not be editorialised.

Disappointing comments will generally be left to fester in ratio, outright horrible comments will be removed.
Message the mods if you feel something really should be removed, or if a user seems to have a pattern of awful comments.
