Learned about this social media called "UpScrolled" just now. What are your thoughts on it?

I actually searched it up online in order to know more and on Reddit, the reputation was not much good. For example, they were saying the platform is full of porn and gore and stuff. Another user was saying that they wouldn't be surprised if Zionists were filling up the platform with such stuff (because there's a lot of anti-Zionists and FreePalestine-movement supporters there.

Aside from this, I searched the app up on Aurora Store and it showed it has 4 trackers (which is a red flag for me). These trackers are: Sentry, Huawei Mobile Services (HMS) Core, OneSignal, Google Firebase Analytics.

My thoughts so far: As a Big Tech's alternative, I expected it to be at least decentralized and have no harmful trackers. But nope. It isn't decentralized, has trackers, not even open-source, has ads. Was disappointing to me.

centralized, not open source, even if it's "okay" now it'll get enshittified sooner or later. tbh I also don't really get why people like the tiktok-ish ux..

Yeah, that's what I think too

Well, I've never tried it, but I don't really see the point of it.

There's already Mastodon or any other number of similar services. There's Pixelfed and any other number of similar services. Lemmy, Piefed... What does UpScrolled do for me?

Seemingly, nothing. I don't care.

Apparently, a lot of people are switching to it after Tiktok got acquired by US. But it's more like Instagram rather than Tiktok IMO

I read about that on Wikipedia. It said that it's kinda like Instagram and Twitter.

I mean, I get the rejection of TikTok, at least... Seems like an odd choice for a refuge, but whatever. Have you tried it out yet?

I haven't. Literally heard about and discovered it just a few hours ago

Ah, I see! Yes, from my cursory look I figured it wasn't decentralised, but it's not even open-source and the trackers... I don't know much about trackers at all, not sure how harmless those might be or if they're for anonymised analytics, for example. Frankly, the simple fact it has ads (and I assume there's no easy way to remove them like with ReVanced for YT) is a deal-breaker. Everything else is just piss on the shit sandwich.

Thanks for the update!

Yup, there's nothing appealing to it honestly. There's absolutely no reason to use it or even give it a chance after knowing all these red flags

Haven’t spent too much time on it but I’ve seen absolutely no porn on it and on the only “gory” stuff I’ve seen on it is related to Israel’s genocide in Gaza. I suppose hasbara trolls could add shitty content to it, I’d figure it’s much more likely that they give it a bad reputation by spreading lies on other social media.

Ultimately I don’t really trust it too much, although I deem it miles more trustworthy than established mainstream social media. Yet it remains a privately owned for profit social media that already plans to serve ads (says so on their faq)and as such, seems doomed to be enshittified at some point.

Ohh, that would make so much more sense! And yeah, I think this will get enshittified too

I can't access it. I tried to register but I never received the confirmation email. Tried a few times. I have my own domain name, but some social sites only permit the likes of Gmail, yahoo, and outlook, etc so maybe that's the issue.

[-] adb@lemmy.ml 1 points 1 day ago

Personally, I had no issue subscribing with my own domain.

The app was made in Palestine (or by displaced refugees), so they aren't shy about showing the reality of the genocide.

They also are anti-censorship, which means that most of the English-speaking communities tend to be... Sympathizers of a certain German leader.

So if you want to wade into it, keep those things in mind.

I didn't know those information. Thanks for the provided info. I'm not at all going to get into the app though. Not even appealing since it has 4 red flags (as mentioned in post)
