Didn’t even know this was an option. How does it compare to Stoat?

I’ve only just signed up and tested out it briefly.

It has screen sharing. The UI is very discord like and familiar. The UI is actually great. Feature wise it’s well implemented for what is there. Less buggy than stoat.

I may have not looked hard enough but there wasn’t a bot discovery or server discovery area.

API documentation is about 90% missing.

I’m parallel testing this with stoat to see which one I prefer before migrating my servers over. The lack of bots is unfortunate though.

Awesome. Hope you’ll post your findings once you’ve made a decision!

I’ve sat in a gaming call with a friend for about 3 hours today. In both stoat and fluxer running at the same time.

Fluxer is well-polished. Zero drops. Noise suppression is not as good as discord, but i preferred it over stoat, which im not sure has suppression at all, but i could be wrong.

The lack of bots is unfortunate but i was reading that the API is very similar to discord’s API so development would be familiar for those geared towards creating bots.

I’m much preferring fluxer as of right now just based on the stability of calls and lack of bugs.

I’ve tested stoat for maybe 7 hours total and had 2 drops. And a few connectivity/UI display issues. For example, my friend would leave the call but it would say he’s still in it. My total use time in Fluxer is about 4 hours with zero issues. It just works, which is impressive.

No issues with Fluxer in practice and use. As of right now, Stoat I believe has a larger user base and user led bots and developers, but Fluxer has a much better user experience.

I’m all for the other user saying use both and see which one comes out on top!

The biggest con to fluxer aside from the lack of bots and discovery is that some features like per server profiles is locked behind a sub, similar to nitro, but only 5 bucks a month - so cheaper. The lack of bots and discovery can be forgiven as this is the open beta imo.

Stoat has all features ready to go in vanilla with no subs.

Wrote a lot more than what I expected but if you have any questions, let me know!

I believe the dev of fluxer has stated you can get all the benefits of a sub if you host it yourself. Which is cool.

Yup, that is true

So if fluxer had mobile apps would you say it'd be a clear win over stoat (or, from the other direction, was there anything about stoat that you preferred/worked better than fluxer, aside from having mobile apps)?

[-] catshaped@lemmy.zip 3 points 5 days ago

Good question.

If either platform had a mobile app I think that would make them the clear winner. As of right now both are rushing to get mobile iOS apps out.

Stoat’s bots that you add to servers similarly to discord is great. Fluxer is behind on that.

I would say, if you’re self-hosting, then stoat’s shortcomings could potentially be fixed such as server instability and lack of screen share and would make it a stronger option.

If you self host Fluxer, you only get the premium/nitro-like benefits for free, which is much less compelling.

I think what my friends and I prefer right now is simplicity - we don’t need bots. We like the audio cues of someone entering and leaving calls. We like the stability of calls. And what we value the most is having a place that’s easy to access and just simply works.

So long way to answer your question: if stoat can add some QOL things like audio cues, adjusting their voice chat UI (which they’re actively working on), have screen share on non self hosted servers, and (most importantly) stability, then it would have been much more compelling.

These issues with stoat are also very minor in the grand scheme of things. So if they fix that and maintain the wave of incoming users then they’re definitely going to be a viable alternative.

I told my friends that Fluxer is great short term, but if stoat navigates this well, then it’s likely going to be the best option for most folks. Stoat has a lot of great features but there’s bugs. I don’t want to say Fluxer has fewer features, but it definitely feels a little less finished than stoat feature-wise to be considered discord replacement ready. But the features implemented so far are pretty good at Fluxer. There is one issue with audio and screenshare that I’m aware of.

It has also been a week since the news and it seems like both Fluxer and Stoat are actively working on onboarding loads of new people.

So it’ll be interesting to see how this arms race plays out. And to emphasize the most important point: it all depends on the needs of the servers you’re looking to migrate that will determine which is better for you. Long-term, it’s anyone’s guess.

Stoat being UK based is non-ideal, another point in Fluxer's favour imo.

I don't know much since I haven't explored both alternatives that much. Stoat looks more polished, since fluxer doesn't have a mobile app available yet.

I think we have to observe in the future how both solutions evolve and which "comes on top".
