People in Georgia have been protesting everyday for over a year (406+ days) but for whatever reason it's not currently getting much media coverage likely because the media tends to not report on reoccurring protests.

There's more information about the protests on the Wikipedia article: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2024%E2%80%932026_Georgian_protests

Basically they're protesting due to election fraud, democratic backsliding and protesting against pro-Russia policies, they want to be aligned with the EU.

In the past decade there have been a drop in protests coverage worldwide, governments are now following instructions not to report on these.

[-] porcoesphino@mander.xyz 48 points 4 months ago

Governments don't own most media. For private companies that rely on money, clickthrough rates decrease for events that continue and that has to be one contribution for the decrease

[-] brachiosaurus@mander.xyz 50 points 4 months ago

Governments don’t own most media.

Most media are indeed owned directly by governments or by people with ties to them.

[-] porcoesphino@mander.xyz 10 points 4 months ago

Any chance you have some data to show how accurate that is? And, are you making a global statement, or just one about Georgia?

[-] brachiosaurus@mander.xyz 14 points 4 months ago

Go to reddit, pick the first media outlet you see and check who owns it, or check who owns reddit.

[-] porcoesphino@mander.xyz 12 points 4 months ago

That's not very statistically relevant.

Also... why reddit when we're using Lemmy commenting on a channel designed for news links? Repeat your prompt for me?

[-] brachiosaurus@mander.xyz 17 points 4 months ago

We are talking about protests coverage and reddit is one of the most visited platforms in the world.

Repeat your prompt for me?

are you a bot?

[-] AntiOutsideAktion@lemmy.ml 9 points 4 months ago

That’s not very statistically relevant.

what kind of debatelord nonsense is this

[-] porcoesphino@mander.xyz 3 points 4 months ago* (last edited 4 months ago)

Its basic maths. A sample of one.

Also, what the fuck?

Where am I debating? I'm asking for information because I would love to have more information. Some random declaring something isn't really information. I honestly wouldn't be surprised if the poster was mostly right. I'm not here to split hairs, I'm just curious and the reply doubled down with a non-answer

[-] surewhynotlem@lemmy.world 8 points 4 months ago

Sorry, here's the prompt again. There's easily searchable information online about the consolidation of ownership of news channels. Instead of talking about that, you're going to reply with a story about the lack of education in America.

[-] porcoesphino@mander.xyz 2 points 4 months ago

I get the condescending thing you're going for but this is lost on me:

Instead of talking about that, you're going to reply with a story about the lack of education in America.

[-] Mulligrubs@lemmy.world 13 points 4 months ago* (last edited 4 months ago)

That's correct, those that own those governments own most media.

Multinational megabanks own most media, they control through DEBT

They also run THE FED, which is in direct control of the USAs money. The USA is not even in control of its own money.

[-] ViatorOmnium@piefed.social 6 points 4 months ago

Even without outside intervention, something that happens every single day is not news.

[-] zalgotext@sh.itjust.works 3 points 4 months ago

Eh, that's basically the exact definition of news actually lmao

[-] Aljernon@lemmy.today 70 points 4 months ago

The political elite all have economic ties to Russia and don't represent the will of their people causing significant tension.

[-] randompasta@lemmy.today 20 points 4 months ago

Just like the US state of Georgia.

[-] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 4 points 4 months ago

hungary, some of the UK politicians, france, germany.

[-] Kirp123@lemmy.world 47 points 4 months ago* (last edited 4 months ago)

I mean a lot of countries have long running protests against their governments. While not an everyday occurrence, Serbs have been protesting since 2024 against the corruption of their government, government which is backed by literal war criminals.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2024%E2%80%93present_Serbian_anti-corruption_protests

Protesting for one day and patting yourself on the back is a farce. Real change takes sustained effort.

[-] Mpatch@lemmy.world 12 points 4 months ago

Lol 400days so far doesn't seem to accomplish much still.

[-] jokersteve@lemmy.world 4 points 4 months ago

If protest would be an effective way to bring change, it wouldn't be allowed.

[-] plyth@feddit.org 3 points 4 months ago

Russia has forbidden western NGOs. Likewise there are constant reminders in the West of which parties receive Russian funding.

[-] made3@sh.itjust.works 25 points 4 months ago

No need to write "The Country" behind it. We already know that Americans will not really protest even though their country turns into third reich.

The protests have been disappointing recently but to be fair, their resistance to ICE raids is quite something. I don't think I've seen anything quite like it.

[-] GreyEyedGhost@piefed.ca 5 points 4 months ago

...in America. In the last 60 years.

[-] made3@sh.itjust.works 2 points 4 months ago

You mean whistling and recording while they illegaly racially profile and abduct innocent people? True, that's something never seen before in America

[-] wonderingwanderer@sopuli.xyz 8 points 4 months ago

Side note: when the "third reich" happens for the second time in history, it's called the "fourth reich."

[-] laranis@lemmy.zip 22 points 4 months ago

And look at all the change they're creating!

Take note, US.

[-] UnderpantsWeevil@lemmy.world 18 points 4 months ago

I don't understand. Trump's only been president for 368 days.

[-] JannusAri@lemmings.world 12 points 4 months ago

At what point do people stop protesting and start acting?

[-] inlandempire@jlai.lu 31 points 4 months ago

Protests is a form of political action

If your comment is about your perceived failure of the protests in Georgia, you should read the linked wikipedia article which contains a detailed timeline of the different actions the Georgian people took, on top of protesting

[-] PiperTheJournalist@discuss.online 5 points 4 months ago

Protest without violence or the very real threat of it isn't good. Look at the Belarus protests to see what happens when you don't protect yourselves and give up all power to the state.

[-] Amnesigenic@lemmy.ml 4 points 4 months ago

How is this downvoted at all? 400 days with no results is a fucking failure

[-] AntiOutsideAktion@lemmy.ml 9 points 4 months ago* (last edited 4 months ago)

👀 oh look a protest in eastern europe where they're waving american flags and being given column space in english publications

they're upset the party not aligned with the west won the election, then tried to do a jan 6 but failed so now they're doing this

I wonder how they've managed to maintain the protests for so long 🤔

[-] paris 14 points 4 months ago

Some protestors stormed the palace (and were stopped and subsequently tortured in detainment) so we should disregard every other instance of tens of thousands of protestors over the past several years. I am very smart.

To anyone who wants to read up on the protests instead of listening to a tankie lie about details and vaguepost about astroturfed protests, Wikipedia is a generally good place to start that cites its sources so you can follow up on details you're interested in:

[-] AntiOutsideAktion@lemmy.ml 6 points 4 months ago* (last edited 4 months ago)

literally read it out of the exact link you posted but go off with your namecalling king

what are you so fragile about that you have to accuse me of lying, and what are you accusing me of lying about?

[-] punkcoder@lemmy.world 6 points 4 months ago

its almost like protesting people without consciences doesn't do anything…

[-] glitching@lemmy.ml 5 points 4 months ago* (last edited 4 months ago)

this shit is happening worldwide. clueless and politically illiterate folks do "the protest thing" because at some point, somewhere, like e.g. in ##way_more_complex_scenario_with_totally_different_actors## it worked! so if we persist, it's bound to happen here, too, nay?

fucking nay.

a protest thing that doesn't have the implied threat of "..or else" is just a hang. and those don't produce anything of importance. see every "peaceful" bullshit protest walk or whatever else impotent, poseur bullshit those ignorant fucks use to dull the blade of revolt.

[-] HeyThisIsntTheYMCA@lemmy.world 3 points 4 months ago

[-] kali_fornication@lemmy.world 2 points 4 months ago* (last edited 4 months ago)

fuck the tbilisi tpolisi

[-] DylanMc6@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 4 months ago

When I said "bring back the Soviet Union (starting in Georgia)", I mean Georgia should become a socialist country again and then others would follow suit, leading to the reformation of the USSR as a competitive multi-tendency country with the Communist Party as the main social institution, dedicated to anti-revisionist leftcom.

Does anyone think I should read theory a bit more?
