Online I found this egg for 23 euros. I then visited several sex shops asking for vibrating eggs like that one. On the first one they showed me this one for 130 euros. They insisted is waterproof according to IPX7 and that cheaper models are won't bring me to orgasm.

Is the second model 6 times better than the first one? I never expected a sex toy to be this expensive.

At another sex shop they offered this which can be bought directly from the manufacturer for 50 euros, but in this sex shop was valued at 90 euros, which is an insane markup.

They also had this one for 130 euros in store.

I don’t know if I should only buy ‘brand’ vibrators or simply trust amazon reviews and buy the cheapest one for 23 euros. Other reviews about the most expensive models over 100 euros indicate some customers are unhappy with the product, considering the price. Neither do I know what brands are reputable ones, if any, because I cannot give back a thing like this if I don’t like it.

Every listed toy is made in China so I don’t get the radical markups.

If you use egg vibrators, are there any brands I should look for?

For vaginal and anal use.

It's not a problem for me, but I think you should label this as NSFW.

Some hypothetical impressionable youngster: "Why would anyone need to shake their eggs up?"

The Lovense one is good if you want extras like ability to remote control the egg over the internet, sync it to music or games, do camming etc.

If you just want a vibrating egg then you don't need the fancy ones.

If you want to control it with your phone, then be on the lookout for a good antenna. I originally bought the Lush 1 and it literally lost connection once clothes were put on. It seems to be better with newer models.

First immersion circulators, now ultrasonic vibrators? What the Hell are you people doing to these eggs?! Modernist cuisine has gone too far!

Tap for spoilerSorry 'bout the off-topic joke; I couldn't resist. Good luck with your 'batin.

I'd like to preface this by saying that I'm a gay dude, so naturally I might not be the best fit for this, but I figure I might as well weigh in with what knowledge I have.

My experience skews more towards dildos and the like, and at least there you rather get what you pay for. Cheaper products have cheaper materials, sometimes there are unappealing smells, or icky residue. I have a pair of dildos I've never used because they were so gross. Since then I've paid the premium for the good stuff, and it's been worth it.

In terms of vibrators, I've only ever owned two, a cheaper brand and a Lovense Edge 2. The cheaper brand conked out quite fast, and when I inspected it closely I noticed that the silicone had also torn in places. The Edge 2 on the other hand is solid.

That said, if the reviews are good, I'd be inclined to believe them. With the Lovense products I expect that a chunk of what you're paying for is just the bluetooth connectivity and app features. If you feel the need to hook your toy up with your phone or PC then it might be worth it, but if you're just after a vibrator with no frills attached, I'd give the cheaper ones a consideration.

The Edge 2, and I presume their other vibrators, have a proprietary charging connection. It's essentially just two metal contacts and a cable with a relatively weak magnet attached; it does the job but for the price I think the cable could be nicer. It does mean that the toy itself is entirely waterproof though.

As an aside, pick up some good toy cleaner that's compatible with the material of the toy you get. Lovense has a pretty alright guide on this. The nice thing about silicone dildos is that you can basically just boil them for a deep clean, but I'd this for electronic ones, waterproof or not. Look for something that's antibacterial.

I use the Bad Dragon cleaner, which is excellent. It cleans nicely, the pump produces a foam so it lasts long, and it's anti-bacterial. That said I wouldn't recommend going out of your way to order it on account of it shipping from the U.S. - it gets expensive and there will be something similar more readily available for you. Just look around.

In short, Lovense is a pretty safe bet but you're not going to have 6 times better orgasms. Check the reviews and particularly look out for what people are saying about the material, you want to avoid porous toys because they are much harder to sanitise properly. Since anal will be involved you'll want to take particular care that the toy is cleaned thoroughly, infections are no joke.

Play safe, and have fun.

For some items cheaper is as good. For sex toys follow the 'buy once, cry once' method and get the nicer one.

all of the eggs I linked have a tail. Do you know how flexible is this part? Can it be bent 180 degrees?

[-] Dojan@pawb.social 1 points 5 months ago* (last edited 5 months ago)

I don’t know, sorry. They might be. I thought the Edge would be more flexible than it is. The looks rather thin so if it’s not supposed to bend, then it looks like it might be really flimsy and easy to break. So it seems more logical that it’d be bendable.

That’s just a guess, though.

The Edge 2, and I presume their other vibrators, have a proprietary charging connection. It’s essentially just two metal contacts and a cable with a relatively weak magnet attached

I see it, 2 unprotected metal contacts. No corrosion so far? No charging problems due to defective contact?

The nice thing about silicone dildos is that you can basically just boil them for a deep clean, but I’d this for electronic ones, waterproof or not.

I don't know if you're telling me to boil silicone toys with electronics and motors inside of them or not to boil them.

[-] Dojan@pawb.social 1 points 5 months ago

No corrosion, also no boiling. I realise my point didn't really get across well; good silicone is durable, and with simple non-electronic toys, like dildos, you can just toss them in a pot and boil for a while. What you want to avoid is oil-based or silicone-based lubricants because it can lead to material degradation, even if the silicone itself is really high quality.

My cleaning procedure for the edge is essentially to get the lube off, wash it with some anti-bacterial soap, and then dry it off immediately. It's been about two years now and it's in solid condition.

[-] helen2345@lemmy.ml 2 points 5 months ago* (last edited 5 months ago)

both the Lovense Edge 2 you use and an egg I'm thinking about buying have a non detachable battery built in, meaning when the battery dies you'll have to buy a new toy or either open it to change the battery, which I'm assuming would be a hassle.

You say you've been using this toy for 2 years now. Any problems with the battery so far?

What practices do you follow to maximize battery life?

planned obsolescence even here...

[-] Dojan@pawb.social 1 points 5 months ago

Right? It's pretty disappointing, the Edge could definitely fit one or two AAA batteries, and you can definitely engineer something to be waterproof and have replaceable batteries. That's not new tech exactly. The entire Edge 2 (and I assume most toys like it) is coated in silicone, so I don't think there's an elegant way of opening it without breaking the silicone. Not sure if there's many teardowns of these things.

I used to charge the Edge after using it, but after coming back to it with very low charge sometimes I've elected to just charge it beforehand. Granted I don't use it that often, so I really can't speak for its longevity. When I do use it more frequently it has enough for a really lengthy session, or two more normal ones.

the toy I want to buy sells now for 30 EUR. Original price was 120 EUR, which is a huge discount.

If this toy is as great as advertised, why are they selling it at a so steep discount? Something's not right.

Could I be buying a used toy?

This model doesn't have any reviews afaik.

[-] Dojan@pawb.social 1 points 5 months ago

That's a really good question, and I don't really know. Could be many things, like a fake discount where something is listed as previously having been a certain price without having ever been that. Granted I think that's illegal in the EU.

It could be that the box it's kept in has been damaged, but the item itself is fine. I've saved money that way before.

I also think these toys are generally sold at a decent markup. It's difficult for me to believe that the Edge for example actually cost ~100€ to produce, but since it's a relatively niche thing to sell (in the grand scheme of things) I think there's a markup to ensure staying afloat.

Now, I'd like to think that returned and used stock isn't put back on the market, but if I said that was the case I wouldn't believe it. People can do really heinous things.

[-] fruit@lemmy.ml 2 points 5 months ago

What you want to avoid is oil-based or silicone-based lubricants because it can lead to material degradation, even if the silicone itself is really high quality.

A little mixed up. Oil breaks down latex, not silicone. So it is unpopular mainly because of not being good with latex condoms. If latex isn't part of the situation, oils and fats are fine. There are commercial oil-based lubes, or any oil or fat that it suitable to eat can be used for sex. Olive oil, crisco, whatever is available and works.

But the silicone-based lube advice stands. Do not touch silicone toy once with even the whiff of silicone lube on your hands. That is certain ruin. I never have them both out at the same time. Keep them in different parts of you home.

[-] Dojan@pawb.social 1 points 5 months ago

Right! Thank you for the correction.

[-] fruit@lemmy.ml 4 points 5 months ago* (last edited 5 months ago)

My opinion, opposite from others, is start with a cheap one and see if you even like the concept. Maybe you don't even like bullet vibes. You can learn that for 20 euros or 200. I think, better to buy a cheap one first and upgrade once you know you like it.

Do you actually want something that works through your phone? That's a lot of hassle and if you are using it on yourself. Your phone will get all gooey. It'll be difficult to hold the phone and the vibe at the same time. If you aren't already looking at your phone, going into it will be distracting. If you are looking at your phone as part of the experience, you'll have to switch out of whatever you are doing. It is a lot easier to use a more classic one with a tactile control (dial or buttons). Wired style means vibe part itself is lighter, while you can have more battery in the controller box.

cheap, old fashioned bullet vibes

You can get them in silicone if you prefer.

If you specifically want a wireless one, then you should expect to pay some for all the extra electronic components and complexity compared to the above. Assuming you want it to work reliably.

Ideally you will go somewhere that has the demo items displayed so you can turn them on and handle them. You will get an idea of what they can do for you. Did you go to some little "boutique" "top drawer" place? Try to find somewhere with a wider selection. Even a small sex store should have several devices of this type to compare.

NSFW photos of sex shop toy displays

The markup is a lot, what is pays for is the rent, bills and payroll of running a brick and mortar location that is available so you can go and handle a bunch of toys before you buy them. It is a lot of overhead. So it's good to buy stuff from those places when you can to keep them open for when you need them. At least a bottle of lube.

[-] benagain@lemmy.ml 2 points 5 months ago

I'm also in the market for an egg vibrator, apparently it makes for a really good breakfast if you scramble them before cracking into the pan.

[-] mub@lemmy.ml 2 points 5 months ago

A reliable source told me a great way to test the vibrations is on the tip of your nose. But I'm not a girl so can't confirm.

[-] skrlet13@feddit.cl 1 points 5 months ago

First I'd try to look up for safe toys in your area (sadly, a lot of sex shops, online or not, sell dangerous toys)

Then, in order of preference

  1. A safe toy that seems very promising to you, confortably inside your budget.
  2. Cheapest safe toy of the type you want to try.

Sometimes you like a toy's concept, but that specific toy does not convince you. Try looking up sex toy reviewers. Some on top of my mind (haven't check them recently tho)
