oh no the selfish german youth that has a future of low wages and no retirement ahead of them doesn't want to be part of the war machine (that only protects stock prices and takes money away from needed social spending) to defend a country that fucks them over since birth?

how could they!

[-] LordCrom@lemmy.world 1 points 5 days ago

I favor a national vote to declare war. Everyone who votes Yes is conscripted into service.

Most of the time, you arent defending your nation, youre invading another nation because they have:

1 Oil 2 strategic land 3 some valuable natural resource your country wants 4 some other religion

Surprise if people do t want to blindly sign up to kill people over those.

[-] Shipgirlboy@sh.itjust.works 1 points 5 days ago

Countries that invade others for resources and land traditionally aren't very democratic in the first place. As nice as your idea sounds, it is unfortunately not viable.

[-] naokao@lemmy.zip 1 points 5 days ago

They should be offered civilian service at twice the length as it was during the Cold War.

Don’t want to fight? Ok two years of agricultural labour for you.

[-] ThoDan@feddit.org 1 points 5 days ago

twice the time was not true

[-] Lembot_0005@lemy.lol 12 points 1 week ago

Typical "Why me? Can't that guy do that?"

[-] Lumidaub@feddit.org 22 points 1 week ago

More like "can we just not do that at all?"

[-] Shipgirlboy@sh.itjust.works 3 points 1 week ago

To not have to do that at all one must be capable to do that.

[-] Lembot_0005@lemy.lol 1 points 1 week ago

People like these should be just stripped of their citizenship. They obviously don't care about the country and shouldn't have any rights in governing it.

[-] kilgore_trout@feddit.it 29 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

You go die for corporations and oligarchs then, I don't want to.

[-] unexposedhazard@discuss.tchncs.de 14 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

Also there are so many options still left before we send people to war. We still havent properly sanctioned Russia at all. There is still money being funneled to Russia in the billions for oil and such. We still havent seized all their assets. We arent sanctioning China. If this situation is serious enough to call for forced conscription, then i want my country to use all possible non military methods to starve Russia of resources first.

[-] Lembot_0005@lemy.lol 3 points 1 week ago

Ok, wait until they kill you.

[-] kilgore_trout@feddit.it 6 points 6 days ago

I didn't mean to offend you, what I meant to convey is: my nation does not provide me something worth defending at the cost of my life. It is not black and white, I am also not sure of what I'd do if my country was invaded.

[-] AgentRocket@feddit.org 2 points 6 days ago

my nation does not provide me something worth defending at the cost of my life.

I get that young people are angry at german politics (and rightfully so). But at least we get to live in a mostly democratic, free country, where you can express that anger and not governed by a power hungry dictator that will have you prisoned and/or killed for criticising them. That alone seems worth defending for me.

[-] plyth@feddit.org 4 points 5 days ago

where you can express that anger and not governed by a power hungry dictator

For what do you think the chat filter are going to be used?

[-] Duke_Nukem_1990@feddit.org 4 points 6 days ago

Yeah and how long is that going to be the case? Once the AfD comes into power all of that might be over. Fuck germany.

[-] Lembot_0005@lemy.lol 3 points 6 days ago

my nation does not provide me

I might sound rude, but I can't express this thought in a nice way: your unwillingness to take weapons and defend yourself is the very reason why "my nation does not provide me". What are you? Nothing. Foreign armies and local governments understand only force. And oppression is their only tool. Democracy works only while "demos" demands. Asking and begging don't work. Asking and begging are for slaves.

You will be a slave until you get a weapon and become a power to reckon with. Before that, "providing you" is a waste of resources.

[-] Duke_Nukem_1990@feddit.org 5 points 6 days ago

Yet another stupid take from this account, almost like it's on purpose.

"Being provided something" does not mean "getting it for free". We are paying taxes and a lot of them. "Being provided something" is the other side of the deal.

[-] Lembot_0005@lemy.lol 1 points 5 days ago

Slaves don't make deals; slaves pay tribute to their masters.

[-] Duke_Nukem_1990@feddit.org 3 points 5 days ago
[-] plyth@feddit.org 2 points 5 days ago

You will be a slave until you get a weapon and become a power to reckon with.

Which weapon do you have?

[-] Lembot_0005@lemy.lol 1 points 5 days ago

Ad hominem is considered a very weak argument since 3-5 grade of school.

[-] plyth@feddit.org 3 points 5 days ago

It can be generalized:

Why should people fight in a war if they are not allowed to have weapons now?

[-] Shipgirlboy@sh.itjust.works 1 points 6 days ago

There's not a lot you could do and none of it would be preferable to not getting invaded in the first place.

[-] kossa@feddit.org 3 points 6 days ago

Idk, it was very preferable for my grandparents to get their country invaded 👌

People still don't understand why democratic societies should have a strong and capable military. It is not to go to war, but to not have to go to war.

[-] kossa@feddit.org 8 points 6 days ago

Turned out great for the democracies in history. They never had to go to war, because their military was strong and capable.

Oh wait, that was in an alternative timeline, my bad.

Turns out: every time in history, when military spending was getting high and armies getting big, there was a war subsequently.

We never tried the other way. Show me a country which didn't fight back and had no army and how it turned out for them, I'll wait.

Worst case? Everything is in rubble and a lot of people dead. But you'll get that with a large army and a war as well.

[-] Shipgirlboy@sh.itjust.works 8 points 6 days ago

So, peace at any cost? Even at the price of your and your loved ones freedom and life? Did I get that right?

[-] Duke_Nukem_1990@feddit.org 5 points 6 days ago

We need to force young people into the army to protect their freedom!!!!1111

[-] Shipgirlboy@sh.itjust.works 2 points 5 days ago

Well, who else is going to do that? If you are not willing to fight for your own freedom, how valuable is it to you really?
Don't expect people to do something for you that you aren't willing to do yourself.

Freedom is never for free. You have to fight for it constantly, if need be with a sword in your hand. But if you want to make sure you don't have to use the sword, you better know how to use it. Because the best way to keep the peace and with it your freedom is to not look like an easy victim and not get attacked in the first place.

[-] Lembot_0005@lemy.lol 3 points 1 week ago

Exactly! This idea should be forced into every German kid's head.

[-] BlushedPotatoPlayers@sopuli.xyz 11 points 1 week ago

Weren't the plans about voluntary service?

[-] kilgore_trout@feddit.it 34 points 1 week ago

It is voluntary at the start, but with the intention to turn into forced conscription if target numbers of new recruits are not reached.
By the way, this target number is expected to be raised on a yearly basis.

It is clear where this is leading.

[-] picnic@lemmy.world 11 points 1 week ago

Tough luck. People are so selfish. The country they live in, people and culture should be worth protecting against, even with force.

Russia and US have destabilized europe and europe needs this in every member state.

Oh, I did serve my compulsory military service myself.

[-] Ibuthyr@feddit.org 1 points 4 days ago

If you stop having faith in your country, it's hard to willingly defend it. I'd like to see a European solution to defense. But not by force. However, the way it was before, you could opt for social services instead which is way more helpful to the country and it also builds character and makes you care for your people and surroundings. That is something I'd like to see return.
