This is from June this year.

[-] Ulrich@feddit.org 6 points 3 months ago* (last edited 3 months ago)

Hmm, well I hadn't heard about it. They just updated the "UserVoice" page so I was notified. Maybe if they had a separate feed for product updates and announcements from their SEO spam I would read them.

[-] lemming741@lemmy.world 14 points 3 months ago* (last edited 3 months ago)

I got a full screen ad when I opened my inbox last week. Closed the app as to not interact with their hostile action. Reopened my inbox, tap the email I was trying to read, and this fucking thing pops back over. Never gonna happen.

[-] Steve@communick.news 34 points 3 months ago* (last edited 3 months ago)

You're on a free account. Do you realy expect them to never try to sell their actual product to you? I bet you never saw this until the upgrade was on sale.

[-] sanpo@sopuli.xyz 14 points 3 months ago

Seriously, of all the things to get upset about...

At least Proton (on paid plan anyway) doesn't spam you with the promotions, unlike the competition you can tell them to fuck off after showing it once instead of "remind me later".

[-] Ulrich@feddit.org 9 points 3 months ago* (last edited 3 months ago)

I agree. Their incessant advertising to paying users is extremely annoying.

E: Proof for the downvoters

[-] Steve@communick.news 18 points 3 months ago

That ad was for an upgrade from free to plus. Not a paying user.

And I've only seen ads to upgrade once or twice a year, max. Specifically when they're running some kind of discount. Does that really count as incessant? How often and for how long does one qualify for incessant.

[-] Ulrich@feddit.org 3 points 3 months ago

I mean probably a dozen times a year in various places. Also every time I change devices it adds "sent from ProtonMail" to the bottom of my emails. I have to disable this per-device.

[-] theskyisfalling@lemmy.dbzer0.com 14 points 3 months ago

I'm a paying user and have not had a single advert from them in 3 years.....

[-] Ulrich@feddit.org 4 points 3 months ago
[-] baronvonj@lemmy.world 3 points 3 months ago

Are you using Proton Unlimoted, or a single service?

[-] Ulrich@feddit.org 3 points 3 months ago
[-] baronvonj@lemmy.world 2 points 3 months ago

Interesting. When I only paid for one service, I would see the occasional upgrade offer in other services. But not with Unlimited. There's not much to up-sell you on when you're already on unlimited except Duo or Family. So not much incentive to display ads.

[-] Ulrich@feddit.org 1 points 3 months ago* (last edited 3 months ago)

There's a giant ad literally every time I open the settings menu, "recommending" that I upgrade to Duo, even though I'm the only person I know who uses Proton. Unfortunately I have to use the shitty settings menu nearly every day because there's no convenient way to block domains.

There's also a "BLACK FRIDAY SALE" ad at the top right. Right now.

[-] Steve@communick.news 1 points 3 months ago

If you close it. You won't see it again. Just a little button at the upper right of the page while the sale is on.

[-] Ulrich@feddit.org 1 points 3 months ago* (last edited 3 months ago)

If you close it. You won't see it again.

There's no way to close the ads in the settings menu. The banner? Sure, until the next advertising campaign. Dismissing ads is not a satisfactory solution. Just don't fucking send them.

[-] Steve@communick.news 1 points 3 months ago* (last edited 3 months ago)

I have done a lot to virtually eliminate all ads in my life.
But you're being a little more than a little unreasonable here.

[-] Ulrich@feddit.org 1 points 3 months ago

I can only strongly disagree. It is not even a little bit unreasonable to pay for a premium service and not expect to be pestered on a regular basis with advertising to upgrade to a higher tier.

[-] Steve@communick.news 1 points 3 months ago

Again 'a regular basis'? It's annual. On their Black Friday sale. A regular interval? Yes, sure. But regular basis is misleading, and hyperbolic.

[-] Ulrich@feddit.org 1 points 3 months ago

It is not annual, I get several ads throughout the year in various locations, as I said previously.

[-] Steve@communick.news 1 points 3 months ago* (last edited 3 months ago)

I think some years they run a second sale during the year. Don't recall when. That might rotate even.

Getting it on multiple devices once or twice a year isn't Several. Again, unreasonable hyperbole and over reacting. This is such a small thing you're getting very worked up over.

I mentioned before BofA does a full page add for first time you login each day! What Proton's doing is closer to zero ads, than "several on a regular basis".

[-] Ulrich@feddit.org 1 points 3 months ago

Getting it on multiple devices once or twice a year isn't Several.

It is, by definition, but without getting caught up in semantics, it is not "once or twice a year". This is the third time I'm saying this. If you want to keep on with the strawman debates, you can do it on your own, because I'm not going to entertain them further.

This is such a small thing you're getting very worked up over.

I don't know what makes you think I'm getting "very worked up". I just said it's the worst thing about Proton, who is otherwise pretty great overall.

I mentioned before BofA dose a full page add for first time you login each day!

I don't know what your point is here. Other companies being dogshit doesn't make incessant advertising any more acceptable.

[-] Steve@communick.news 2 points 3 months ago

I'm not strawmaning you. I'm flatly saying you're wrong. I'm saying it's not as often as you're protraying. That your inflating the severity of the problem. Again you said "incessant" when you already pointed out it doesn't happen often enough to fit that characterization.

[-] Ulrich@feddit.org 1 points 3 months ago

Hey there. Me again. 2 days later and there's another ad:

[-] Steve@communick.news 1 points 3 months ago* (last edited 3 months ago)

We've been over this. It's the same ad you're seeing multiple times. Like looking at a wall on the street covered by a dozen copies of the same band poster. They all don't count separately. They're all for the same event. Just like this.

[-] Ulrich@feddit.org 1 points 2 months ago

Hey there. Me again. Another week, another ad. Are you still going to delude yourself into believing this is not a thing?

[-] Steve@communick.news 1 points 2 months ago

Oh Wow! This is the first different one! I haven't seen that since I sent a referral to someone.

In fact I might argue it's not so much an ad in itself, but a request for you to send someone an ad. It works more like those reminders a lot of sites have. The ones that want you to complete setting up your profile. It's more that kind of thing than an actual ad.

... Or maybe I clicked the "Don't show this again" button. I don't remember.

[-] Ulrich@feddit.org 1 points 2 months ago

I might argue it's not...an ad

I'm shocked.

[-] Ulrich@feddit.org 1 points 3 months ago* (last edited 3 months ago)

I'm not strawmaning you

No, you're saying something I haven't said is wrong. I keep telling you it's not once or twice, and yet you still keep arguing with the idea of once or twice. That's the very definition of a strawman.

you already pointed out it doesn't happen often enough to fit that characterization.

I did not. You made that up. I've been using the platform for several years. It has refused to cease, despite my protests. Again, the definition of incessant.

[-] Steve@communick.news 1 points 3 months ago

I was trying to give you the benefit of the doubt, and assume you weren't being literal; That you were being hyperbolic, as I said. It's not Strawmaning if I'm saying your wrong in how often it hapens. Which I am. It's not as often as you say.

It's literally only a couple of times a year. Specifically when they have a sale. That's all. Nothing more. Ever. In total your're only seeing the large ad twice a year. And the upgrade button in the corner of the website for a week or so, as long as each sale is on.

Your characterization and annoyance are extreme and unreasonable.

That's what I'm saying. I'm done.

[-] Ulrich@feddit.org 1 points 3 months ago

You're just lying.

[-] Ulrich@feddit.org 1 points 3 months ago

Oh look there's another ad today. A week later. But yeah, it's only once or twice a year.

[-] Steve@communick.news 1 points 3 months ago* (last edited 3 months ago)

Wait wait wait.
THAT'S what you're talking about?
THAT'S what's got you all agitated?
I thought we were talking about the full page advertisement.
THAT'S not even an ad!

You're waaaaay out there. Never mind. There's no debating crazy.

Unlimited user here, only ad ive seen from them is the updated icon on the app store that is too small to read. Beyond that, didnt even know they were doing a sale untill a colleague of mine brought it up.

[-] ohshit604@sh.itjust.works 3 points 3 months ago* (last edited 3 months ago)

I pay for the Duo plan only for the support with SMTP/IMAP on custom domains along side the 1Tb drive space. I only ever notice the ads on ProtonPass trying to upgrade me to the family plan.

Really not as intrusive or annoying as people make it out to be but I must agree as a paying user we should not have to deal with ads.

[-] 42beansinapod@discuss.tchncs.de 10 points 3 months ago

Its a bit dissapointing. When I saw this I was hoping that it would be an actual way to manage ssh keys and sync them, but it is just for copy pasting them like passwords, now the field is called ssh key

Maybe I will have to consider using proton pass over Bitwarden. This was one of those things that had me returning to Bitwarden as proton pass wasn't fully baked yet.

[-] baronvonj@lemmy.world 5 points 3 months ago

Proron Pass still doesn't have any setting for how it matches domains/URLs to saved passwords.

[-] voytrekk@sopuli.xyz 3 points 3 months ago

That's actually a pretty big feature for me. Having different logins for the different services on my server means I need to match the IP and port for the URL.

[-] ohshit604@sh.itjust.works 2 points 3 months ago

I don’t think ProtonPass even recognizes port’s, I recall it would bring the login for every different web-app/selfhosted service for that specific IP.

Reverse proxying is a saviour that’s for sure.

[-] baronvonj@lemmy.world 2 points 3 months ago

Pass can't distinguish between subdomains. So all my home . items in Pass are suggested for each I access.

[-] ohshit604@sh.itjust.works 1 points 3 months ago

I remember having an issue similar to this! I believe the login for the root of my domain was the cause of this, it’s very finicky but I manage to get it to grab the right login for the right subdomain on my desktop, mobile is horrible though and doesn’t work nearly as well.
