"GL iNet" has a dizzying array of products and some are designed for this (you can find them for sale on the usual scumbags). Surprisingly, for a niche brand you've likely never heard of the firmware is surprisingly robust and has a small but loyal community. Expensive, and you might not want to carry an extra piece of hardware to provide a bulletproof VPN connection, but worth it for the security IMO.
Unfortunately when you set the hotspot on Android, it doesn't share the VPN. You would need to connect again from the PC or to use an app like "everything proxy" on the phone, then set the laptop to use the phone ip address as a proxy
It seems Every Proxy is not open source. I like this app more: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=cn.adonet.proxyevery. It also isn't open-source.
Instead, I started using TinyProxy in Termux. It's very simple.
Same on iOS. Hotspots do not share the VPN connection.
You can try one of those portable routers that can connect to the Internet via WiFi or cable and configure it with VPN to your house. The work laptop won't know any better !
