State law already mandates that retailers stop using the plastic bags on Jan. 1. Friday’s settlement hits the manufacturers with $1.7 million in penalties, establishes that they violated state law by selling unrecyclable bags for years, and will result in many of the bags being removed from the market early, before the end of this year.

When it happened in NY a few years ago everyone lost their minds for like a week, but I think people have come around to it. I love my bag, it's fairly heavy duty and it holds a hefty amount of groceries. I'm just shopping for one person, but it holds my weeks worth of groceries. No more carrying 13 separate bags and feeling bad about all the plastic lol

NJ did this or at least near me. I do miss the plastic for a single reason

They were the perfect size for bathroom garbage cans! The best!!

and dog poop - average stores sell fabric based ones in NJ for like 15-25 cents usually now

Step in the right direction!

I disagree. They stop giving bags but they still sell boxes of bags. They're just bags- they carry your next groceries, your lunch, dog poop, bathroom trash, the junk in your car, cat litter, ... Why do we ban bags and then buy more bags?

For the cat litter, I've started to save and use the plastic bags we get with our food anyways. Lots of things like frozen food, bread, chips, whatever, come in bags that can have a second use before being thrown away.

Because it means people use a lot fewer, which means a lot less plastic blowing into waterways

🤷 We donate the good ones to the food bank and use the thin ones around the house. Trying to reuse more and buy less. Also, trash bags have become crazy expensive!!
