I dunno, I'm torn. On the one hand, fair, trump's basically been doing whatever he wanted. But on the other hand, is that really accurate? How much power does a shutdown grant him to seriously cut back on things before the midterm results can hopefully constrain him?

And then the really icky politics, will this hurt dem voters enough to sit out midterms? If you lose your job because the democrats fought on this, sure you might have healthcare but people are really bad at keeping those hypothetical comparisons in mind at the ballot box (witness the rage at Biden for the inflation that ravaged the entire globe.)

But then to veer back to Jon's side, what's the alternative? Just give donald everything?

Yeah. My POV on it is, more or less, this one. The Democrats are kind of trying to split the difference between "of course we want to protect people's health care, to take it away would be an emergency, otherwise we're fully on board with business as usual" and "the president is declaring war on American cities and we have to stop it, shutting down the US government indefinitely right now sounds better than the alternative." They should pick a lane.

I don't think they are wrong for trying to protect people's health care of course (and also, a little bit crucially but for some reason less talked about, to re-assert that little 1% claim they have to being as an equal branch of government instead of a compliant bunch of rubber stampers who will get kicked and blamed for everything if they ever try to ask any questions or resist), but also it seems kind of like sanewashing everything else that is happening to treat it as a big emergency.
