And before that it was lines from Monty Python

[-] Death__BySnuSnu@lemmy.world 26 points 4 days ago

Are you suggesting coconuts migrate?

[-] Rolive@discuss.tchncs.de 14 points 4 days ago

Not at all! They could be carried!

[-] Death__BySnuSnu@lemmy.world 6 points 4 days ago

What? A swallow carrying a coconut?

[-] Lushed_Lungfish@lemmy.ca 6 points 3 days ago

It could grip it by the husk!

[-] DataDisrupter@feddit.nl 4 points 3 days ago

It's not a question of where it grips it, it's a simple question of weight ratios!

[-] Lushed_Lungfish@lemmy.ca 5 points 3 days ago

A five oz bird cannot carry a one pound coconut!

[-] wizardbeard@lemmy.dbzer0.com 15 points 4 days ago

Imo, kind of a shame that Holy Grail dominates the references, with some backup from Life of Brian, and like one line from Meaning of Life. So much good stuff from Flying Circus goes unused.

I know you're there - lurking under the floorboards with your damsons and your prunes...

The other jokes are ex-jokes. They have shuffled off the mortal coil.

[-] Rcklsabndn@sh.itjust.works 3 points 3 days ago

Pushing up daisies. Joined the choir immortal.

Bloody vikings...

[-] Hasherm0n@lemmy.world 4 points 3 days ago

Even after Austin Powers came out it was Monty Python. Or Aqua Teen Hunger Force (specifically the first mooninites episode). Sealab 2021 gets honorable mention.

Oh be-haaave baby

[-] paraphrand@lemmy.world 28 points 4 days ago

… those were memes. Memes were never invented, they were just identified.

[-] dgbbad@lemmy.zip 8 points 3 days ago

"How DARE you break wind before me!"

"I'm sorry, baby, I didn't know it was your turn."

[-] omgboom@lemmy.dbzer0.com 25 points 4 days ago

And lines from Chappelle's show. I'M RICK JAMES BITCH

[-] ragebutt@lemmy.dbzer0.com 19 points 4 days ago

This was so annoying it broke Dave chappelle

[-] ech@lemmy.ca 12 points 4 days ago

Nah, money and power broke him. He had is crisis of faith, and then went all the way to Africa just to decide he liked being rich as fuck, and then he started acting like a rich fuck.

It was never one source, always a combination, but when something quotable came out, it became vocally memed to death for like a whole year.

No a Meme is a Black Frame with white text around a wild image.

Edit: The person who responded to this is blocked by me. Its funny I can't even see the people I block posts but this person can comment on my post. Its not really worth it to see who it is since chances are I wouldn't want to see the drivel they posted. Having said that does me blocking someone not prevent them from seeing and commenting on my post on lemmy? Or are they using some script kiddy method to do it anyway?

[-] MehBlah@lemmy.world 4 points 3 days ago

The people I was hanging with online used memes in 1997.

[-] skisnow@lemmy.ca 3 points 3 days ago

the whole point of it was that it was a .gif

[-] UnderpantsWeevil@lemmy.world 3 points 3 days ago

YTMND is still going strong.

[-] Rcklsabndn@sh.itjust.works 3 points 3 days ago

Any time I have the urge to say how dumb and pointless TikTok is, I flash back to YTMND and YouTube Poops and shut my mouth.

[-] UnderpantsWeevil@lemmy.world 2 points 3 days ago

The Algorithm and the app design is more insidious. The older stuff just got annoying and stale after a short while. My brief flirtation with the TikTok app was horrifying simply in how hard it was to get the damned app to turn off. Every direction you swipe and nearly every button you push just takes you to a new video, at least until you get really stubborn about it.

[-] MehBlah@lemmy.world 2 points 3 days ago

Which one? The one just dancing or the one dancing while pissing.
