Ico and Shadow of the Colossus creator Fumito Ueda recently said that the age of developers creating new mechanics is over, something he’s apparently being saying since Journey. For the most part, I agree with him. But there's one AAA game that bucked this trend - Watch Dogs Legion. With its incredible NPC recruitment system, it turned what would otherwise have been an okay game into a great one. There are some flaws however...

I wouldn't say it's over, in fact there's so many great indie games that are based on only a few very simple mechanics.

I also wanna say the recruitment mechanic in legion was great but the variety of recruits was not. It got boring really quick.

The loss of character identity was not great for this game.

It didn’t help that my game had a save-breaking issue that set me back 5 or 6 hours.
