The digital euro won’t be a crypto. It will compete with Visa and Mastercard (which are American).

[-] x00z@lemmy.world 17 points 5 days ago

It's meant as a wallet and not a bank account. So more of a PayPal alternative.

[-] JumpyWombat@lemmy.ml 3 points 4 days ago

Yes, it will work more or less that way, but it won’t rely on Visa or Mastercard.

Couldn't happen too soon, Visa and Mastercard extract wealth with literally every purchase on their network

That doesn't compete with those fully either lol, competes more with SEPA if you ask me

As far as I understand, Wero is just an alternative to Swish, which has been around for like 10 years. And that is definitely not an alternative to Visa/MasterCard.

if it adopts the Ethereum blockchain or a proof-of-work model it may prove just as harmful

All cuz China is basically already doing this and about to replace the scammy international banking system?

[-] ClassyHatter@sopuli.xyz 1 points 4 days ago

That, and China uses it to monitor their people in one more way.

[-] Randelung@lemmy.world 1 points 4 days ago

Isn't immediate transactions coming to banks now, anyway? What's the need for this?

[-] FrostyPolicy@suppo.fi 21 points 5 days ago

The digital euro project has been in the works for quite some time so it's more us copying the eu.

[-] JumpyWombat@lemmy.ml 15 points 5 days ago
