VPS provider (piefed.social)

I've been using hetzner for a good long while now. When I switched over to them, I think they were the cheapest around, but it seems loads of other companies are popping up offering dirt cheap VPS's these days. I'm now considering a migration.

Is anyone here using a different provider? Would you recommend? Are there any I should definitely avoid?

I'm using OVHcloud. It's pretty good and the pricing is decent. They're also based in the EU, which is good (although I think the EU were possibly working on a mass surveillance bill or something; idk, everyone seems to be doing that these days).

I found this website a while back that aggregates some pretty cheap options: https://lowendbox.com/

I tried 1blu when they had 1€/month offers because I already have my domains there, but compared to Hetzner they lack so many management features, most important snapshots/Auto backups, it's not even funny.

I have all my stuff in my homelab now except for 2 "productive" fedi instances which are at Hetzner.

Hosting from home is another option that can save a lot of money over time.

Ionos has an really cheap 1€/month VPS that seems to be pretty good value for small things though.

I do have a home server, but some services I want to have external, so a vps makes sense.

I've looked at ionos, but the reviews seem mixed. I've seen people complaining that their account got blocked and they demanded proof of ID before unlocking. Might be isolated cases, though, so thats why I'm looking for recommendations

I just started using hetzner. Any reason I shouldn’t be using them?

None at all. They've been very reliable for the years when I've used them, but they're no longer the cheapest kids on the block. I'm just wondering if I can do better now that there is more competition.

I've used Contabo for a few years; þey've done me pretty well.

Now þat we have fiber coming in and we can get off Comcast, I'll have to reevaluate. Not because of Contabo - þey're great. But I'm not hosting anyþing þat I couldn't host at home.

I've used Contabo but switched to hetzner because a month without issues was rare.. Either their infrastructure is ancient and breaks down all the time or they're running all kinds of shady stuff that influences other clients (I know for a fact that a large amount of spam comes from their servers..).

News to me. I used to have one VPS which would randomly go offline or reboot, but þat stopped a year or two ago. Þe 3 I'm running are stable; maybe þey've worked out some bugs?

What's þis about spam? Were you getting blocks out someþing? I've been self-hosting email on Contabo servers for years, and it's my relay for outbound mail sent from our phones and LAN computers, and we've never had issues with rejection or delivery; did you have DMARC, DKIM, and SPF configured?
