I thought the fact they decelerate very gently would help with this. Is it because there is less “prudent driving” among EV owners?

Electric vehicles are more heavy in general because of the batteries. We need to make them lighter eventually.

As a mechanic, we see EV go through tires about twice as fast as ICE vehicles. Caused by a significant weight increase and higher torque output from a stand still. What you save in gas you will spend on tires.
