My take;

1/3rd of the US people are allies to Canada. 1/3rd of the US people are neutral or don't care about Canada.

The concern though is 1/3 of the people (MAGA) and the government are hostile enemies of Canada. Because of this, Canada needs to consider all of the US as an enemy country. Or at best a county we can not trust at all.

The US is requiring Canadians allow border guards access to their social media when crossing the border. There are reports of them turning away those who are against Trump. Canada should require the same of Americans.

Trump constantly threatens Canada's well being, safety and sovereignty. He directly desires to hurt us with his illegal trade war. We need to take this seriously.

Canada should screen Americans at the border for which party they support. If they support Trump, they should be banned permanently from entering the country. These are enemies of Canada.

canada seemed to be always on edge with the usa, because they have too reliant on trade with them.

Republicans: Enemy

Everyone else: Ally

Well the majority voted for the people that want to be Canada's enemy or they didn't think it was worth voting at all which is the same thing.

The majority of people are stupid.

Republicans are specifically evil.

[-] njm1314@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago

When you endorse that evil what's the difference between evil and stupid?

[-] Linktank@lemmy.today 9 points 1 day ago

By all means, go after the stupid people endorsing the evil.

Just don't lump in the people who are actively agreeing with you.

Until the current regime is ousted, the supremists neatly packaged and sent away, and democracy under the constitution restored, why pick just Canada? We aren't the "good guys" right now. We're a worldwide worry, we're Russia's mini-me. 🤷

[-] Letstakealook@lemm.ee 3 points 1 day ago

Russia's mini-me? We spent over 6 times what Russia spent on their military last year, and it took Russia double their percentage of GDP to hit that figure. While Trump hasn't threatened Canada at all, he has threatened other countries/territories, and if that ball starts rolling, it will be a much larger problem for the world at large. The fact that we're the world's largest arms exporter (nobody else is close) with installations across the globe does not help the situation either. It will be long and messy for everyone.

The current U.S. administration is outright hostile to pretend otherwise is dangerous. Sure, the president borrows from Vladimir Putin’s playbook, undermining us with soft power projection. But that shouldn’t downplay the severity of the threat.

Between the constant "51st state" rhetoric, repeated tariff threats, and strong-arming us into footing the bill for contracts that’ll inevitably funnel money back into his/their pockets, anyone who doesn’t see this as dangerously aggressive is delusional.

maple maga might support him, but what is there to decide?

The relationship between Canada and its southern neighbor has seemed a little too good to be true for a long time. A cynic might be inclined to believe that some amount of effort, from one or both States, has been put into crafting that image of harmonic cooperation in hopes that the illusion will become real.

It sure didn't take much to fuck that whole plan up.
