J. K. Rowling is a transphobe, a bigot and a fascist.

[-] Fubarberry@sopuli.xyz 20 points 1 week ago

The first two yes, but is she actually a fascist? Outside of her being a terf I think the rest of her political views are supposed to be pretty left leaning and anti-authoritarian.

Regardless I think enough other people were more directly involved in this game that people should be free to play it guilt free if they want to.

Identifying an out-group by an immutable attribute of their person, and then railing against them as inherently inferior is fascist behaviour.

Rowling is some white trash but it seems everything is fascist ~~nowadays~~ this word lost its meaning altogether

fascist fascist nazi... doesn't bring anything to mind anymore. Could be a brand of orange juice at this point or some children snacks

Looks like it was already a problem in 1944 as Orwell writes:

It will be seen that, as used, the word ‘Fascism’ is almost entirely meaningless. In conversation, of course, it is used even more wildly than in print. I have heard it applied to farmers, shopkeepers, Social Credit, corporal punishment, fox-hunting, bull-fighting, the 1922 Committee, the 1941 Committee, Kipling, Gandhi, Chiang Kai-Shek, homosexuality, Priestley’s broadcasts, Youth Hostels, astrology, women, dogs and I do not know what else.

Honestly it is unfortunate that most internet commenters are nearly illiterate and aren't able to come up with more precise adjectives

A lot of people worked on this yes... But she did directly state that the money she makes from the game will go to transphobic causes so...

Yes you can play it as long as you don't advertise it or give it any money

[-] SCmSTR 3 points 1 week ago

Honestly just let it die like the rest of the actual cast of the movies.

There are plenty of other great things to do with your time.

The fuq are you smoking

You realize that she's taking it so far and now she's just a MASSIVE tool of the racists and fascists, right?

And that her absolute seething hate for trans women now extends to basically all queer people? It's literally brainrot, that level of ignorant hate.

Then on top of that the ways she holds herself in ignorance and violence is NOT left leaning at all. She's too dumb, and is tyrannical in effect and power structure. She thinks she's punching up, but is just punching anything in sight and can't walk away from queer people.

She's ACTUALLY fallen off the deep end. Her policy is NOT left at all anymore, she's not even a politician, and in reality, all she does or stands for is her rhetoric about anti trans women, and now as it spreads onto the rest of queer people and now cis women are in danger because of what she's done because she's a dumb, hateful piece of shit with other dumb hateful pieces of shit who keep giving her money to play a shitty game and defend it and her publicly because, well, hey, walks like a duck.

Stop defending her, she's not defendable anymore if you even have half a brain OR a heart.

Let the ip die, the main cast of the movies all have. Publicly. They won't do anymore hp stuff because she's THAT shitty and won't give up the ip because she's bent on spending hundreds of millions of hateful money to make the world terrible, and conservatives and dumbfucks are eating it up and feeding it to other ignoramuses.

I'm sick of pulling punches against this bullshit, it's bullshit and we all know it. Stop defending her. Stop it.

Supporting Turfs = down vote ⬇️

[-] Fubarberry@sopuli.xyz 18 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

There were hundreds of people who worked on the game, and the game itself went out of it's way to feature trans characters. I doubt there's a single AAA game or mass produced product out there that isn't partially owned by some individual who you don't want to support, so I think singling out hogwarts legacy in particular to boycott is kind of meaningless.

You could argue that by boycotting it you're sending a message, and just singling it out as an example, but the game already sold incredibly well and is a huge success. I don't think there's any reason at this point that someone who grew up enjoying harry potter and wants to play the game should feel bad about it. Seems silly to deny yourself something you might enjoy over some small change going to a billionaire you don't like.

[-] jac 17 points 1 week ago

Sounds like terf apologia to me.

[-] boletus@sh.itjust.works 10 points 1 week ago

The last AAA game you played is almost guaranteed to have been worked on by at least one racist, trans phobic, radical extremist of some kind. Just something to consider.

[-] trevor 8 points 1 week ago

Do those one-off bigots that perhaps lended some labor to said games get royalties for the IP? If not, then this comparison is not even close to valid with a billionaire bigot raking in more wealth based on an IP they poisoned.

[-] boletus@sh.itjust.works 1 points 6 days ago

Perhaps it wasn't the best example, but the point I'm trying to get across is that almost any game you've played recently is likely profiting a bigot in some way or another.

Shareholders will always exist. Funding sources. Executives. Just because they didn't write the code doesn't mean they weren't involved with the development. And they certainly make money off the success.

[-] trevor 2 points 6 days ago

Sure, but that way of thinking seems to treat trying to avoid supporting bigots as some sort of "purity cult" game, and it's not. Just because there's no ethical consumption under capitalism, that doesn't excuse people to make highly unethical purchases.

Of course you can't perfectly avoid any bigoted shitheads from having worked on something you buy, but you wouldn't buy a game where the majority of the royalties go to David Duke, would you?

Some people are just doing the best they can to not support bigoted assholes, and when it comes to gaming, a market that exists purely for entertainment, and one that has millions of other options, that's rather easy and practical to do.

[-] SCmSTR 1 points 6 days ago* (last edited 6 days ago)

I think the truth of the matter is just that a lot of people don't care. And if they know that JKR does what she does and contribute to her rampage, it entirely does make them antagonists to the cause of good.

And then there's the matter of willful ignorance. That's something I can never forgive but is all too common.

[-] jac 5 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

None of them bought the UK supreme court though.

Make no mistake, it is currently impossible to engage with the harry potter franchise, at all, without contributing to the dismantling of equality.

I'm not saying don't play the game if that's what you enjoy. I'm just saying; you should probably keep it in the bedroom and don't do it in front of children.

[-] boletus@sh.itjust.works 1 points 6 days ago

Of course always vote with your wallet. Just saying it's a complex topic and it's one thing to boycott it because Rowling profits off it, but you're also excluding the hundreds of hard working game developers who put years of their life towards a legitimately good game.

Unfortunately, because of the existence of shareholders, pretty much anything non indie is going to be profiting off exploitative rich people with generally loads of prejudice against marginalised groups. Even indie games you're kinda stuck, look at factorio for example. Or you're supporting the storefront. There may be ways to consume games ethically maybe but there's always a catch somewhere. Informing consumers of these choices is important, but judging them for it is reductive considering the only winning move is not to play.

[-] jac 1 points 6 days ago

I'm not convinced by arguments towards "support the developers". They've already been paid for their work and won't be getting royalties, and so buying and playing the game supports them neither financially or morally.

As to your final point; judging people for decisions they make is the ONLY thing that's okay to judge people for. This isn't a war game, and by not judging them you, personally, are helping to bolster the biggest terf in England. So I'll continue judging the people who engage with HP, and I'm also judging people who decide to defend them.

Basically, when it comes to the harry potter franchise, the only winning move is to not play.

  1. don't support things that support nazis

  2. jkr is very very rich, and very very actively a transphobe

  3. she VERY actively uses her money to degrade society

  4. "you're just one person and don't matter" is not good logic even if it were the logic here, which it's not, because she's so rich and powerful.

Honestly, take your head out of your anus and see that you're justifying doing a shitty thing. She's got garbage cancer and needs to gtfo. Let the ip die, she ruined it.

You wouldn't say the same shit if the main proprietor were an ACTIVE Nazi. Or maybe you would also apologize on her behalf? Or does it just take some other level of mental gymnastics to justify your own ambivalence to massive injustices that aren't at your own expense?

[-] SCmSTR 7 points 1 week ago

Fuck jkr and the pieces of shit that give her money.

[-] woelkchen@lemmy.world 6 points 1 week ago

This is the Steam Deck community. Technically speaking, giving her money is not required because Deck is not a traditional games console.🏴‍☠️

[-] DonutsRMeh@lemmy.world 5 points 1 week ago

I love this game. I've played it a lot on the PC. Going to install it on the deck now.
