The Video
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RqUiVkDeGk8

My response
I'm... done with this guy. He's trading in his old mindset of not taking the black pill and doing and not giving in to rage and bitterness, andj ust... taking a steaming shit on people.

His attitude is summed up by a comment that.... frankly is the reason I'm not following the man anymore.

'If reddit mods were winning at life they wouldn't be reddit moderators. They literally do it for free.'
Counterpoint: Some people like being helpful for its own sake or knowing that the job has to be done and that a community of like minded people is goodto have even if they're essentially the janitor.

Then this string of comments
'Redditors losing is nothing new'
'Selfishness and losing at life is the very essence of being a redditor.'
'There is a reason people make fun of "redditors"'
'The average reddit user has never stood up to anybody except their mother, who's basement they reside in. I can't say I'm surprised.'
Counterpoint: You do not know these people. Yet you paint a broad brush for the sake of simply pointing, laughing, and going 'HA I'm better than THOSE people HAHAHA look at me!.'

Then there is this gem
'Louis, I think what you should understand is that an awful lot of these critiques of your actions are made by people who are, in some way or another, Jokers. Heath Ledger Jokers, to be exact. What they are trying to do is prove that deep down, everyone is as ugly as they are. They lash out at you because they are convinced that you must be a bad-faith actor in some way, because they can't imagine acting selflessly for a cause that doesn't expressly benefit them. You aren't blind, so why exactly would you ever bother going out of your way to help a blind person? This is the kind of behaviour that a large part of the modern internet condones and actively promotes, especially reddit. Corporations know this, and they encourage this, because they know it is very effective as a what amounts to a digital union-busting measure.'

Commentary:
White knighting louis's behavior while also describing anyone criticising his methods as inhernetly and intrinsicly 'wrong.'

This is why I am walking away from Rossman. He's inviting this sort of behavior.

I'm no saint. Far from it. I actually agree with several people who have, over the years, screamed at me that I need mental help. My problem is these people are broad brushing for the sake not of commentary and reaching to either help or to give 'tough' love to rock someone out of complacency, but to make themselves feel better because nobody is going to stick up for 'a redditor.'

Replace 'redditor' or 'reddit mod' with other words.

'If black people were winning at life they wouldn't be in this situation. They literally do it for free.'

''Selfishness and losing at life is the very essence of being gay.'
'There is a reason people make fun of "homosexuality".'

Suddenly not so OK is it?

So no. I don't care what points the man might have. Look at the commentary he's inviting with his 'look how shitty and stupid these people are' rhetoric.

I'm out.

'If reddit mods were winning at life they wouldn't be reddit moderators. They literally do it for free.'

This guy sounds like a sociopath that doesn't understand what hobbies are.

While I agree that this isn't a good comment, Rossman (the author of the video) didn't make it. OP is attributing comments made by random users to the creator himself.

Did we watch the same video? Your "attitude is summed up by:" seems completely antithetical to what was said. The true thesis, in my opinion, directly quoted from the transcript is:

"Getting what you want in life whether it's out of your business, your personal relationships, or even a legislative hearing is not necessarily about focusing on your own selfish interests it often comes down to whether or not you're willing to help somebody that nobody else is willing to help that you can tell is clearly in distress when you have the means and you have the opportunity to do so."

This is in response to a redditor emailing him accusing his take on the reddit situation as being essentially "pearl clutching", supposedly saying:

"Be real you don't care about the blind or disabled and you never did, this is virtue signaling of the highest order...."

I might be "knighting" a bit here but as someone who didn't even use a 3rd Party App and wasn't directly impacted by Reddit's actions, Louis's past video on this topic was what actually caused me to delete the app and not look back. Thus I feel that if I found value, it is possible others can too.

Agreed -- not only do I think OP misunderstood Louis's point (if you have the means to help and the opportunity to help, you should help), their post also doesn't make clear that the comments being cited and quoted in it weren't actually said by Louis during the video (or said by him on the channel), but were comments made on the YouTube video by people completely unrelated to him.

It seems easy to read the post and mis-attribute the quotes to Louis based on how it is written, but he didn't actually say any of those things.

[-] Deralax@kbin.social 6 points 1 year ago

Louis is just as human as the rest of us and occasionally has a shitty take or has to walk a statement back.

He struck me as someone very persoanlly invested in everything going on with reddit, and is reacting with his abrasive "fuck you" attitude.

While i don't agree with his points in this video, i will say he has a pretty good track record of swallowing his pride and admitting he fucked up, which is more than i can say for a lot of creators.

Im not personally going dig my cross and nails out of the shed for this one, there is currently somebody else more worthy of our wood and nails imo. cough spez.

Strong subtext of "...who?" needed here.

Like, why is some dude's video something that needs incensed rebuttal in /m/RedditMigration? I don't recognize this man, I don't recognize his name ... why is what he thinks about reddit mods particularly noteworthy? There's similar takes available at the bottom of half the comments sections on Reddit at any given moment.

From OP's summary, it sounds like this guy is tossing hot takes back at someone who said something that bothered him, and like ... people say nastier and stupider things than normal when they're upset.

I don't think it's really worth giving attention to? It doesn't seem like this guy is shaping opinions or part of preexisting discourses around Reddit and Reddit Migration.

Watch Louis Video. OP misrepresents his points.

[-] Singletona@kbin.social 1 points 1 year ago

yes and no.

Yes Rossman is more substansive and provides actual good advice, but no in that he outright encourages rage flame baiting and daring people to call him on his behavior while he fosters the kind of commentary posted.

I dont' care what he's saying if the community around him is being a toxic cesspit.

[-] Dick_Justice@lemmy.world 5 points 1 year ago

I don't really engage with him anyway. every time I see him come up somewhere, it seems like just a lot of rage baiting to increase views. Meh.

[-] quaddo@lemmy.ca 1 points 1 year ago

"Who's he when he's at home?" would fit here.

Also: meh

[-] explodingkitchen@kbin.social 4 points 1 year ago

IMO, the comical thing is that the audience he's playing to (users pitching a tanty because their favorite sub is banjaxed) is more likely to be hanging in mom's basement than the mods he's attacking.

[-] Wereduck 5 points 1 year ago

I'm a bit confused. My understanding is that Louis is in support of the blackout. Am I out of the loop?

[-] DmMacniel@feddit.de 4 points 1 year ago

Yes he is in full support to the blackout but it was done wrong. When you give corporate an end date then it literally means nothing to them as they can continue their shitty way on any other day of the year.

[-] Singletona@kbin.social 2 points 1 year ago

He's being a jackass about it and basically trashing the protests because there isn't this immediate collapse, and for all we know admins have transferred username control to new mods.

Yea there are a few who want to hang onto the banhammer, but the way rossman is portraying it. Everyone in reddit is a failure and he's blaming the userbase.

[-] DmMacniel@feddit.de 4 points 1 year ago

That's not his point. His point was: when you give cooperate an end date to your protest (48 hours) then that means they have to brace for 2 our of 365 days for this little storm in a water glass.

Watch his video series about Reddit again and slowly and try to comprehend what is being said.

[-] MrShelbySan@lemmy.world 4 points 1 year ago

I used to respect the guy for standing for Right to repair and all that, but those comments from him are just unacceptable. The video is despicable and I won’t watch his content anymore. Sad.

[-] Wereduck 8 points 1 year ago

I'm a bit confused if I watched the same thing as OP and you. I don't think those comments are from him, but rather random people responding to his video? The video seemed like an argument that pure self-interest is self defeating, and on the importance of solidarity, in response to someone saying that supporting blind access is virtue signaling. But with a clickbaity and a bit misleading title (note apostrophe position in Redditor's vs Redditors')

[-] faltuuser@lemmy.world 4 points 1 year ago
[-] Kenraali@kbin.social 2 points 1 year ago

Thanks for perpetuating the stereotype of redditors.

[-] DmMacniel@feddit.de 1 points 1 year ago

I guess you didn't understand Louis then and even showed the perfect example by ranting like that to his point?

Kudos.

[-] Singletona@kbin.social 1 points 1 year ago

'KUDOS'

Yea look at the dipshit army that's following him. He's encouraging or at least turning a blind eye to the behavior.

Plus i'm DOING something about the problem. I left. So Congradulations for feeding into the stereotype that constructive convrosation cant' be had because the first person that talks will be shouted down by sarcastic derps.
