Summary

Germany's Bundestag Budget Committee approved an additional €3 billion in military aid for Ukraine, on top of the €4 billion already planned for 2025, with another €8.3 billion pledged from 2026-2029.

The aid includes Iris-T air defense systems, guided missiles, radars, drones, and combat vehicles.

The package was delayed by political disagreements that led to the coalition government's collapse.

As the U.S. scales back support, Germany’s commitment reassures Ukraine, with President Zelenskyy expressing gratitude and calling it crucial for Ukraine’s long-term security.

Sometimes I'm surprised how fast these breaucracies can work if the leaders really want to. I'm mildly optimistic that we can still turn this around and fuck the USA. Present company excepted of course!

Fast? The invasion started in 2022…

I'm talking about the rude awakening of Jan 2025

It’s nice to see the rest of Europe coughing up money

[-] HK65@sopuli.xyz 46 points 1 day ago

Europe was already financing the majority of the defence.

Yeah. America (USA) only made empty promises. Most of their aid didn’t even arrive. It’s just hot air.

But, as a German resident, and considering that we just approved one trillion for Defense and infrastructure, with no actual cap if we needed more, I feel like 3 billion is kind of a joke? Am I wrong?

[-] blakenong@lemmings.world 5 points 1 day ago

I guess it depends on how those billions are spent?

[-] DicksAndPizza@lemm.ee 1 points 1 day ago

Yeah. I guess. It is what I said.

[-] blakenong@lemmings.world 2 points 1 day ago

Oh did that upset you? Weird way to interpret that.

[-] DicksAndPizza@lemm.ee 1 points 1 day ago

No. It did not upset me in any way. I would be curious as to why you think that, though.

[-] blakenong@lemmings.world 3 points 6 hours ago

People don’t make dismissive comments when they aren’t upset. Also, you didn’t mention anything about how it was spent. An 3 billion euro toilet seat would be a waste.

And we always hear about how we have no money, hospitals closing at an alarming rate, schools closing.

But apparently we have 3 billion to send to Ukraine.

I am not against sending money to Ukraine but this sum bs.

[-] Tja@programming.dev 24 points 1 day ago

They won't be sending containers full of euro bills. They will manufacture equipment in Germany (or refurbish), pay German salaries, collect German taxes and send that equipment to Ukraine.

And 3 billion euro is 35 euro per resident. So basically the MwSt from a weekly grocery trip.

[-] VeloRama@feddit.org 10 points 1 day ago

We've just had 500 billion in infrastructure investments over a span of 12 years approved by our goverment. That's 41 billion/year. Obviously we have those 3 billion to spend.

[-] Turbonics@lemmy.sdf.org 1 points 6 hours ago

Not on schools and hospitals though.

[-] FlashMobOfOne@lemmy.world 7 points 1 day ago

Welcome to our world here in America, where our citizens regularly die waiting for care in emergency rooms so we can make war profiteers richer with money they'll never actually live to spend.

[-] Pingudiem@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago

Well we didn't really. At least planned. And then cxu and the rest approved being less strict with funding and financing over all and tada: lots of numbers on a screen.

In Finland there is a party whose social feed was full of line items from the national budget they thought worth eliminating.

It's really the only time when I've seen someone really take a look at the budget and try to figure out how to save from the non-essentials instead of arguing about how much to spend on eg. Hospitals vs defence.
