In order to streamline our free consumer communications offerings so we can more easily adapt to customer needs, we will be retiring Skype in May 2025 to focus on Microsoft Teams (free), our modern communications and collaboration hub.

I remember at one point a company i worked for had Lync messenger - M$‘s corporate messenger. Then, when they bought skype it went through a whole rebrand to Skype business, but the process still showed up as lync.exe in the task manager.

I suspect renaming the process itself was deemed an unnecessary risk, which I would agree with. Even if I agree that it looks stupid.
