After moving in to our new server last month, our next large project is to set up some new Fediverse platforms. One of the most requested of those was Pixelfed, which is an image sharing platform.

You should be able to sign up here: pixelfed.ca

As with any new instance, some issues are to be expected and while we've done some testing already, please bear with us as things get going. For any support related issues with pixelfed.ca, please post in the new !pixelfed@lemmy.ca community

I've turned off registration temporarily while we resolve the below question, since people would have to re-register if we migrate domains.

Sooo uh. Right after we launched this, Dan (pixelfed dev) got back to us and said we could have pixelfed.ca if we want it.

How does everyone feel about pixelfed.ca vs pixeld.ca for our base domain? Now's the time to pivot!

Edit: We're up at https://pixelfed.ca/ now instead, come on over! You probably do not want to to try to migrate an existing account.

I do think pixelfed.ca sounds more organic.

[-] Shadow@lemmy.ca 20 points 2 weeks ago

I agree. I'm inclined to switch once the domain transfer finishes.

[-] apprehensively_human@lemmy.ca 24 points 2 weeks ago

I like pixelfed.ca for the simple reason that it shares the name with the service, same as Lemmy.

[-] cheerytext1981@lemmy.ca 16 points 2 weeks ago

Pixelfed.ca is way better. If you type pixeld.ca on mobile, autocorrect will try to change it to pixels.ca. Constantly. It’s very annoying. pixelfed gets suggested to pixel fed or pixelated, both which are a bit more obvious

[-] breakfastmtn@lemmy.ca 10 points 2 weeks ago

Pixelfed.ca is the winner, I say.

[-] Sunshine@lemmy.ca 7 points 2 weeks ago

Agreed, it sounds better to my ears!

[-] kmacmartin@lemmy.ca 9 points 2 weeks ago

A bit too late to vote (pixelfed.ca would have been mine anyway), but I love how something like this can happen on the fediverse. Other types of services (eg: x.com) are all about competition and screwing over the other guy, and then here you have one instance handing over a perfect domain to another so they can have a better presence.

Huge props to Dan for giving up his domain, as well as to the lemmy.ca team for expanding the fediverse.

[-] DarkSirrush@lemmy.ca 9 points 2 weeks ago

Pixeld.ca feels really awkward to say/read, pixelfed.ca is definitely better.

[-] Mereo@lemmy.ca 7 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

I like pixelfed.ca. I love feeding myself with some pixel cats photos (get it?... Yeah...).

[-] Kyle@lemmy.ca 2 points 2 weeks ago

Hey I can see people interpreting it that way. Like binging on social media, except this isn't addicting so you just get fed then live on with your life.

[-] GlassHalfHopeful@lemmy.ca 4 points 2 weeks ago

So glad this worked out! It's a better choice domain wise!

[-] sik0fewl@lemmy.ca 3 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

You (or otter) should update the post as well. I was super confused by the redirect 🙂

[-] Shadow@lemmy.ca 4 points 2 weeks ago

Surprisingly, lemmy won't let me edit his post since we're both admins. He'll update it soon I'm sure.

[-] Mohamed@lemmy.ca 3 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

pixeld.ca sounds better to me.

That said, maybe pixelfed.ca sounds more formal, plus it might avoid confusion if both pixelfed.ca and pixeld.ca are instances.

[-] Sunshine@lemmy.ca 3 points 2 weeks ago

My vote is for pixelfed.ca

[-] Undearius@lemmy.ca 3 points 2 weeks ago

I'm sure "pixeld" would be pronounced like "pixelled" but when I saw it my immediate thought was "pixel dee".

While I do like the "pixelled" pronunciation, I think "pixelfed" is less ambiguous and it's clear what service it is running.

[-] uhmbah@lemmy.ca 3 points 2 weeks ago

+1 pixelfed.ca

[-] hal9000@lemmy.ca 16 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

Great. I'm slowly but surely leaving American social networks, so it's great to ee more options.

[-] Sunshine@lemmy.ca 3 points 2 weeks ago

I can’t wait for the day we have Fedecan: Friendica, Matrix and Peertube instances. That way we keep our data in Canada!

[-] Stalinwolf@lemmy.ca 14 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

This is great. I downloaded the app a while back but held off on proceeding past the instance selection, as I was hoping to see a simple .ca option. Guess I'll go back and sign up!

[-] i_stole_ur_taco@lemmy.ca 13 points 2 weeks ago

Awesome! I dropped my barely-used account and set up a new one on our instance.

It’s all cat pictures!

[-] otter@lemmy.ca 8 points 2 weeks ago

I always need more cat pictures

[-] Sunshine@lemmy.ca 8 points 2 weeks ago

Woohoo another nail in the Meta coffin! Lets use canadian social media!

[-] yardy_sardley@lemmy.ca 7 points 2 weeks ago

Have y'all been in contact with Chad over at mstdn.ca? Would be pretty cool if we could support the mastodon folks in some way as well!

[-] otter@lemmy.ca 8 points 2 weeks ago

We've messaged back and forth :) Nothing official yet

Would be pretty cool if we could support the mastodon folks in some way as well!

Agreed!

Amazing work! Made an account as a placeholder (for now) and the site's really snappy.

Edit: Goodbye account. It was nice knowin' ya 🫡
Edit2: Hello, even newer account! 🫡

~~Welcome~~ Welcome!

[-] needthosepylons@lemmy.world 6 points 2 weeks ago

Good, can we do some kind of CAN/UE fusion ? There's apparently nothing left of any ideal worth pursuing in the US. Time to stand together I guess.

[-] Khlo 5 points 2 weeks ago

Is the lemmy community also being migrated over to !pixelfed@lemmy.ca?

[-] Shadow@lemmy.ca 4 points 2 weeks ago
[-] Perhapsjustsniffit@lemmy.ca 3 points 2 weeks ago

I'll have to migrate after Jiu Jitsu.

I love how it's just pet pics and nature haha

[-] apprehensively_human@lemmy.ca 3 points 2 weeks ago

@Shadow@lemmy.ca am I missing something with how federation works? I'm trying to follow the admin over at stux@pixey.org; I am able to search for them and I can see the account but there are 0 posts.

I can see there are some posts on the Global feed from accounts on .social, so I guess I'm just not sure if I'm doing something wrong or if it'll just take a bit to sync up.

[-] Shadow@lemmy.ca 2 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

Unfortunately I don't think historical posts are pulled in, just things that have happened since our server started watching their server. If you follow them you'll see any future things they make (as will other users on our server).

[-] hoserhobbes@lemmy.ca 1 points 2 weeks ago

I see a similar issue with following hashtags. For example, I search for '#photography' which displayed a load of results across instances by said '0 posts'. I followed it and none of the cross instance hashtag results appear in my home feed.

Presumably it is only looking at the pixelfed.ca instances of '#photography' but this seems against the point of the whole thing no?

When I log in to my pixelfed.social account, doing the same thing pulls in results across different instances to the same homes screen (using the Pixelix app), so I'm not sure what the difference is.

[-] prodigalsorcerer@lemmy.ca 2 points 2 weeks ago

Is it possible to just use our lemmy accounts to log in? My understanding of activity pub and the fedeverse is that it should be possible, but maybe I'm misunderstanding something.

[-] otter@lemmy.ca 2 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

Unfortunately you can't do that yet. That's one of those things that will hopefully be possible eventually with the Fediverse. Right now you can view content from elsewhere, but the accounts are tied to the instance that you are on.

It is possible to sign in with a Mastodon account on some instances, thanks to an integration they set up. It might be possible to do something similar with Lemmy, but I imagine it would be more difficult. Mastodon and Pixelfed were relatively similar already.

For example, it's technically possible to view your lemmy user on pixelfed.ca: https://pixelfed.ca/i/web/profile/798599852495369073

You can also view a pixelfed.ca user on here: https://lemmy.ca/u/shadow@pixelfed.ca

However both profiles are blank, so federation between Pixelfed and Lemmy isn't as smooth as say, Pixelfed and Mastodon

[-] Adderbox76@lemmy.ca 2 points 2 weeks ago

This is great! Thanks!

[-] stormio@lemmy.ca 2 points 2 weeks ago

Yes! It's finally here! My first experience with Pixelfed was back in 2019 on an instance which got shut down shortly after I signed up. It really demonstrated the importance of picking the "right" instance. Given Fedecan's track record with Lemmy.ca, I know Pixelfed.ca won't suffer the same fate. 😊

[-] Adderbox76@lemmy.ca 2 points 2 weeks ago

Is there a way to login with my mstdn.ca account like I can with the main server?

Can't sign up through the web app. The web form sends the request, then the password fields clear, then nothing. Just stays there.

Retried just now on pixelfed.ca and it worked fine. 🙏

Here's a bike for you.
