Imagine dreaming to fly to space only to be denied having it because you also cared about the rights of indigenous people.

They're getting ready to colonize ~~Gaza~~ Klandathu. They can't be caring about the indigenous life. /s

Their cowardice is palpable. If only NASA could run experiments so that we could understand how the concept of fear-based self preservation eliminates any semblance of courage when faced with even the smallest threat to their ill-defined paradigm of manhood.

In a parallel universe where we have a functioning federal government, I’d imagine something like this would be worthy of a grant or two.

You're significantly underestimating how many Chud engineers NASA employs. The agency that was founded by Nazis refugees has always had a shit history on race politics, cinema hagiographies produced decades later notwithstanding.

In a parallel universe where we have a functioning federal government

One of the biggest jokes of the US depiction of the Space Race was how many times we got our asses drubbed by Russians with less money, manpower, and educational resources, simply because our administration was so cartoonishly incompetent. We have an obscenely wealthy federal government that can afford to fuck up on the scale of trillions of dollars and still come out ahead.

[-] Corkyskog@sh.itjust.works 6 points 2 days ago

Isn't there an entire movie about racism in NASA that's basically just a feel good story for white people?

[-] UnderpantsWeevil@lemmy.world 10 points 2 days ago

Hidden Figures. More or less "The Help" for NASA dweebs.

It concedes that black women were instrumental in developing and executing a successful space race, but gets really cagey around questions like "Why did NASA only have a White Men's Restroom to begin with?", "What caused us to omit people like this in films like Apollo 13 or The Right Stuff?", and "How come the women who pioneered implementation of Fortran at NASA weren't able to pivot into senior administrative roles, private contracting firms, or academic positions like their male peers?"

If you have the funds, please support Internet Archives.

[-] stardust@lemmy.ca 103 points 3 days ago

With internet archive head quarters being in the US what would happen if the administration went after them? Would people from other countries be able to keep the project going?

[-] bobs_monkey@lemm.ee 56 points 3 days ago

That's unfortunately a very valid point. Iirc the big problem IA has is the sheer amount of disk space required to store everything.

[-] __nobodynowhere@sh.itjust.works 24 points 3 days ago

I wish I had the necessary petabytes of storage to at least store an offline copy. I wonder how many disks that would be and how redundant disks you'd need.

[-] bobs_monkey@lemm.ee 31 points 3 days ago

Here's this from 2021. They say they have about 200PB of raw storage across some 20k spinning drives at the time of writing (with more being added constantly, about 25%/yr), and capacities are mixed from 4TB to 16TB, across 750 servers housed on about 75 racks. I have 6x16TB WD red pros that ran me about $355/ea new with tax, and my bill was a smidge over $2100. Assuming you used all 16TB, you'd need about 12,500 16TB disks, which would run you about $4,437,500 without a bulk discount. How much of that is redundancy I'm not sure, but that's just HDDs, not the hardware to actually run everything between storage enclosures, OS, disks, memory, clustering, etc. They say they say a single copy with 16TB drives would be about 15 racks., but how that breaks down I'm not sure.

I once made this calculation for a database of 700Tb, even that blew my mind 🤣

[-] Petter1@lemm.ee 30 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago)

We need to distribute all that data, for the sake of history in the future. Data hoarding and torrenting is a service to humanity.

[-] echodot@feddit.uk 9 points 2 days ago

Not just data but in important scientific research too. The republicans want to drive the US back to the stone age, because that's when they were last relevant.

Janet Petro—the first woman to hold the position since its founding 67 years ago—wrote that diversity programs “divided Americans by race, wasted taxpayer dollars, and resulted in shameful discrimination,”

In 2021, when she was the director of Kennedy Space Center, she spoke at length in an interview about the value of diversity, saying “our commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion and accessibility has been paramount to mission success.”

The turnaround is giving me whiplash.

There's no begrudging following of the rules, it's wholeheartedly embracing the new regime.

[-] Empricorn@feddit.nl 13 points 2 days ago

This is just another version of pulling the ladder up behind them, no?

[-] UnderpantsWeevil@lemmy.world 10 points 2 days ago

DEI is largely about raising the profiles of minority workers in roles and positions that were both vital to mission success and underpaid/underappreciate-for-promotion relative to the whiter career roles.

Petro's following in the grand tradition of Boomer senior leaders by pulling the ladder up behind her now that she's at the top.

I was told to change gender to sex on the apps I develop. I'm pushing to have it removed all together because it's a field that has no relevance and the order is fucking dumb. My niece is trans saying they don't exist doesn't make them not exist.

[-] seven_phone@lemmy.world 49 points 3 days ago

When it is easy everyone thinks they are Oskar Schindler but when it is hard most people are Hugo Boss.

[-] hamsterkill@lemmy.sdf.org 31 points 3 days ago

The quote from the email isn't her words. They were given to her (and all agency heads) to send out to their workforce to implement the EO. It should not be taken as "embracing the new regime".

[-] seeking_perhaps@mander.xyz 16 points 2 days ago

She sent the email. They're her words now.

[-] Tja@programming.dev 27 points 3 days ago

So... "she's just following orders"?

I thought those fucking cretins were supposed to be reducing government waste. How is forcing agencies to paint over murals with positive vibes and update their website to remove magic words a good use of their time and money?

because it's not and never was about that and by the time everyone else realises it will be too late to stop it without great effort

The best way to understand DOGE is to be aware of what it really means: Department of Government Enshitification. The entire point of it is to generally degrade the quality of government.

[-] Xanthobilly@lemmy.world 13 points 2 days ago

Because it gives SpaceX an edge over NASA if you delegate menial tasks to PhD level people.

What happened to indigenous people and women? I swear I saw one just an hour ago so it seems like they still exist. Maybe not?

[-] JDCAce@lemmy.world 22 points 3 days ago

That was a cat. You saw a cat an hour ago. Indigenous people and women have never existed. It's been straight white men since Adam and Steve. Wait...
