I'm all for mangakas getting paid properly, but isn't this just down to the companies and their vanity? Literally ever manga accrued their international audience via piracy.

I guess they figure they have enough people watching anime and reading manga legitimately now that they don't need piracy to spread the word anymore.

Literally ever manga accrued their international audience via piracy.

I don't know about that; lots of people read using official methods now. Of course, that's probably just because most of the biggest titles can be read for free legally these days.

This together with the VISA statement about Japanese adult content is hilarious in a sad way (at least, I'm assuming the 18+ side of anime and manga will be affected by this system too).
