I originally went with the same name but have been using this one now since it's new and the idea of starting fresh appeals to me.

My initial thought was to reuse my existing name so others who already knew me might see that I'm here since we never communicated outside of the given subs we were apart of. I'm not sure how likely that would actually be though. It's not as if I was anyone popular or well known. So, my thinking is I'll stick with my new one and move on.

What have you chosen to do? Start fresh or carry your username over?

I use this UN basically everywhere. Here is no different.

[-] justinh_tx@kbin.social 5 points 1 year ago

Same. I've been justinh_tx for 20 years or more on just about every site/service that let's you have an underscore in your username. If I can't have an underscore I'm justinh512tx.

Replying to you. I’m brand new here and wondering how in the fuck do I leave a reply to the thread? The only reply button I see is for other comments not to the post.

[-] HandsHurtLoL@kbin.social 2 points 1 year ago

The comment box is at the bottom of the stack of comments, so you have to scroll to almost the entire bottom of the page to start a parent comment.

I…uh, went with a classic.

[-] NotABearJustAHuman@kbin.social 6 points 1 year ago

I decided on a totally new name. New place, new name

[-] DefiantBarber@kbin.social 3 points 1 year ago

I even did a new email since I didn't want my username tied to my primary one!

New one. And i had an extremely scientific observational method for coming up with it.

[-] Dickbutt@kbin.social 2 points 1 year ago

New one I wanted a something that would make me look like the "cream of the crop"

[-] daddy@kbin.social 5 points 1 year ago

I was pretty hyped to snag “daddy”

[-] phoenix_fairy@kbin.social 4 points 1 year ago

New one. My reddit one is from over a decade ago. While most of my online stuff is using that ancient name, I've started using a few more since then. Granted I'm re-using one of my newer names, but still

[-] CaCtUs2003@kbin.social 4 points 1 year ago

Used the same username. I am envisioning a future in wherein whenever somebody needs to search up something on Google in regards to some tech issue/opinion, instead of putting "best gaming laptop 2023 reddit", they will instead search "best gaming laptop 2023 kbin"

[-] StarbuckBuckBuck@kbin.social 4 points 1 year ago

Went with a new one. Still sci-fi inspired but wanted that "fresh start" feel

[-] Bubkis@kbin.social 4 points 1 year ago

Completely new name, I had like, 10 reddit accounts, I'd make a new one every year to avoid anyone potentially stalking me

[-] Katttt@kbin.social 4 points 1 year ago

I'm using a new one. I like a change!

[-] grapefruit_crackers@kbin.social 4 points 1 year ago

Same. It has sentimental value so I wanted to keep it.

[-] Zedd_Prophecy@kbin.social 4 points 1 year ago

My Reddit name pre dates Reddit by more than a few years. It will outlast Reddit if I have my way.

[-] Sentinian@lemmy.one 4 points 1 year ago

New name. Old name was a wayy different me anyways

Changing usernames and/or deleting mature accounts can be an approach to privacy that may be useful. Tracking algorithms from huge tech companies might be sophisticated enough to identify you anyway with information like public IP/location and browsing habits, plus who knows what else.
Nevertheless, I still change usernames frequently.

[-] taco_ballerina@lemmy.world 3 points 1 year ago

Same. After using the same account for a couple years it occurred to me that just by observing what subs I post in you could pretty easily figure out who I was if you were looking for me. Sub for my job, city, hobbies, chronic disease, etc. I figured there's no good way around that other than just lurking, but since there's not a lot of benefit to having an old account I might as well get a new one every year or two. Make myself just a little bit harder to find.

[-] Caph@kbin.social 3 points 1 year ago

Yep this is what I do too. If you’re active in discussions the longer you have your account the more likely it is that it can be linked to your real self

[-] LegacyFlex@kbin.social 4 points 1 year ago

This is a new one. I thought it'd be a great chance to come up with some cool new name but I feel kinda "meh" about it.

[-] dairokkan@kbin.social 4 points 1 year ago

I did not. Sometime last year I changed my username to this across all platforms, but Reddit wouldn't let me change it.

[-] Raymond@kbin.social 3 points 1 year ago

New one, wanted this from the beginning but was already taken on Reddit 10+ years ago

[-] Belzecue@kbin.social 3 points 1 year ago

I took the opportunity to ditch the edgelord name I came up with when I was 14

[-] Gabbro@kbin.social 3 points 1 year ago

New. I didn't need to consult some name generator this time to find something I liked. I thought about getting something crude but I'm going to be using this account for quite a while so I chose this.

[-] Spaceman2901@kbin.social 3 points 1 year ago

This is one of three nicks I use all over the web. One for social media, one for shooters, and one for MMOs.

So yeah, kept my /u/ from Reddit.

[-] 34@kbin.social 3 points 1 year ago

I created a new one as all the short ones were long gone at Reddit.

[-] Lexica@lemmy.world 3 points 1 year ago

I'm using the name I would've used had it not been taken.

[-] Melpomene@kbin.social 3 points 1 year ago

I use a different user name on every site these days. Not that UberMegaDataAIBot can't track me if it tries, but I don't need to make it easy for it.

[-] abff08f4813c@kbin.social 3 points 1 year ago

Mine was from an old open source project. I no longer use it and have started to use a different name elsewhere - would have changed it on Reddit too if Reddit had allowed it.

[-] VulcanSphere@kbin.social 3 points 1 year ago

VulcanSphere is my username (almost) everywhere within the cybersphere.

So, yeah. Stick with a recognisable name.

[-] GxC@kbin.social 3 points 1 year ago

I went with a new one. Fresh start and all.

[-] woooferine@kbin.social 3 points 1 year ago

Same one for me.

Back in my beginning days in Reddit, I originally wanted to register "wooferine" but it was already taken., so I chose "woooferine" instead.

Yes, I kept the extra "o" here. My g-board knows my username, so why change it?

[-] Caph@kbin.social 3 points 1 year ago

I’ve got a new username. Starting fresh! But tbh I tend to clear down and get a new username every so often anyway. Probably just being paranoid but feel like it keeps my account more anonymous.

[-] Takeshidude@beehaw.org 3 points 1 year ago

I’ve been Takeshidude since I was maybe 11 back on Lego.com

Feels wrong to have any other name

[-] _I_@kbin.social 3 points 1 year ago

Yes, but no. It's inspired by my Reddit username, but I managed to get a much much shorter variant on Kbin, lol.

[-] NotMyOldRedditName@kbin.social 3 points 1 year ago

I think my name says it all

I've been wanting to use a different username for a while now cause I've been using the same one literally since AOL. but I couldn't think of a new one until a few months ago and this was the perfect time to use it. And it fits me more.

[-] SpacemanSpiff@kbin.social 2 points 1 year ago

Different name, although this is the one I use everywhere else. I just wasn’t early enough to nab it on Reddit ;)

super old username.

[-] okcool@kbin.social 2 points 1 year ago

new to try and get a more basic name

[-] the_thunder_god@kbin.social 2 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

New name....have been changing some names around recently. Pretty easy to spot my accounts with my avatar though.

[-] girl4life302@kbin.social 2 points 1 year ago

I tried to reuse my name but I've messed up something and can't login anymore, just made a new one numbered

[-] FirmRip@kbin.social 2 points 1 year ago

I went with my alt username. My Reddit username was the first part of my gmail address because I was dumb 14 years ago (well, dumber, anyway) and didn’t know you couldn’t change it.

[-] god@sh.itjust.works 2 points 1 year ago

i wouldn't share names cuz then i'd have ppl know who i was, bad OPSEC. Instead, I doxx myself here so that others cannot doxx me.
