I have come across many weird porn videos, gore etc. but a few times I have come across something that isn't that disturbing but uncanny. A random login page on a dark web site, a random comment on some sports blog seemingly written to conceal something. What are the things you have seen?

A thread on the 4chn (back in the days when it was still ruled by non-jaded M00t).

There was this guy, who described a place he visited in his dreams every night. It resembled a cross between "House of Leaves" and some prison and the dreamer didn't know what he had to do, but felt that something is required of him. He was part exhausted by the experience, part scared. What struck me was that the guy sounded genuine, and convincing. His testimony was unlike all those abominable greentext edgy bullshit.

The story is now lost to the time, since there's no archive of threads from such ancient past.

I sometimes wonder to this day what did happen to the guy, whether he found the solution to this cruel puzzle, or succumbed to it, thus losing his sanity and possibly life...

I'm commenting in the hopes of one day finding out more about this story. I'm super interested in freaky dreams.

You may try to download this archive and check it for the thread. With some luck, it's there...

What little I remember is that it happened on /x/ (obviously) and either the thread or the guy in talking was named "Vault Dweller". It was taking place so long ago that the name didn't result with immediate "hue, hue, hue, BASEMENT DWELLER, morelike" responses. The story wasn't very complicated, but the guy sounded tired, very tired, like someone on the edge of collapse, or resigned. He claimed that he feels some presence there, in the structure he always lands in when he falls asleep, but he didn't encounter nothing, just empty spaces.

Sounds like the backrooms.

I've had an email in my inbox for over a decade. The subject is FYI. The sender is listed as Allen Large, but in all caps. And the body is as follows

--
Email Mr Allen now.

Realistically it's just bad spam but sometimes I get myself wondering what shady deal fell apart because they sent something urgent to the wrong person

My husband and I share an email account for bills, which is (his name).and.(my name)@gmail. For some reason we also get the email of some other people with our names, and when you look at the to header, it's just our names without the periods, so for some reason we get email for people in Australia and Missouri who share our names,, it's just some Gmail glitch. I get their Walmart orders and soccer team schedule and emails about their apartment they are selling, etc. So maybe it's that.

[-] Doug@midwest.social 4 points 1 year ago

I can actually explain that.

Gmail will ignore periods and things after a plus sign.

So if we assume my name in so if you have Man.And.Wife@gmail it's the same as ManAndWife@gmail as well as M.a.n.A.n.d.W.i.f.e@gmail or anything in between.

You could also use ManAndWife+roebuck@gmail if you wanted to filter out the emails you get from a defunct retailer.

It's all very useful for categorizing emails and tracking down who is selling your email address to spam lists

[-] BonesOfTheMoon@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago

Oh wow. Well I get a lot of other people's email that way!

[-] Doug@midwest.social 2 points 1 year ago

If there's any you thought you should've gotten and didn't that's probably what happened there too

I'm a former Livejournal user (yes I am that internet old, I imagine many of you won't know it). When the Russians overtook the site, there were some very weird photo communities called carpet_rise and flower_carpet that basically were photos of Russian people that included the Turkish patterned rugs that Russians often use, in all sorts of peculiar situations. I put many of them on r/anormaldayinRussia back when I used Reddit. I always wondered why they were created (if you decide to visit them be aware they are often nudes). It wasn't porn, it was just odd.

The 4chan UAP larper.

A fun read, even if it's as substantial as smoke. The writer does his best to connect the dots of all the recent UAP news and sightings that have been happening. Still, his posts helped drive a fair bit of the engagement surrounding current events. The air of anonymity from places like 4chan really captures the imagination.

@MrZigZag Right, I just can't forget this C-beams glitter in the dark.

[-] BonesOfTheMoon@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago

Also I ended up on the dark web once before because I had just started taking Ambien and didn't realize you have to lock up your phone (managed to download Orbitz and everything), and wound up on some reddit clone.

[-] With_Teeth@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago

your dark web is: damn uncanny

[-] spez@sh.itjust.works 1 points 1 year ago
