Just to clarify, all men at the age of 18 are currently required to register by law. This just automates the process.

Whenever I look up a topic and the only "news" outlets covering a topic are right wing rags it's odd. Maybe waving the big, scary government overreach is coming for you is supposed to scare voters to trump, dunno?

But... but it was the house that passed it... the house is currently run by republicans...

[-] finestnothing@lemmy.world 23 points 1 year ago

That won't stop Republicans from blaming Democrats for it if it's unpopular with their base. Afterall, there were democrats present for the vote

But automatic registration for voting still is evil right?

Yes, we should make that harder. You have to go to the 4th Presbyterian church on the 2nd Tuesday of the week directly following the harvest moon to register. And only Sandra can register you, if it's Patty there you're screwed.

Yeah, then some of the wrong people might vote. /s

I think the bigger story is that the Senate is proposing an amendment that includes women in the draft

Definitely.

This isn't only being covered by right wing rags.

I found it on Yahoo and military news sites too. The rest were heavy right lean to full-on wack job. So you're not wrong.

So somehow our representatives are fine with auto-enrollment of citizens for the draft, but a number of them oppose auto-enrollment for voting?

[-] OutlierBlue@lemmy.ca 14 points 1 year ago

Yes, because the draft lets them tell you what to do. When you vote, you tell them what to do.

You can see the obvious problem with that.

Ignoring the current contents because it's basically just making a thing that already exists more efficient, don't forget that in the eventuality where you actually are drafted, you retain these options:

  • Conscientious objector. Some rationalizations can exempt you from the draft. Others will just have you thrown in prison, which is a much better thing to do than killing brown people living in some target of the US Empire.

  • Sabotage. Sure, do boot camp and eat the free food. Then pop tires, break engines "accidentally", etc. Historically, some people have even taken liberties with what to do about their commanding officer, often the one telling them to kill a whole village. But of course, I can't tell anyone to do that.

  • Leave the country.
