I can't find any updates from the past three years either.

Workers printed smiley faces and put them on paddles so they could fool the cameras and cry their way through the day.

I'm glad you prompted me to rtfa. Confirmation or confirmation bias, I agree with it.

For a lot of wild animals, smiling can be a sign of aggression or unease. This is just an initiative to help humanity rediscover it's natural roots by changing the meaning of smiles back.

as unnecessary as it is cruel

[-] Diplomjodler3@lemmy.world 30 points 2 years ago

The cruelty is the point.

Oh looks like there's a Dr Who episode on this exact thing.

I was put in mind of my favorite episode: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Happiness_Patrol.

Maybe not a direct match for the camera bit, but probably the kind of culture they’re trying to create.

Does... Does the state own canon?

[-] TheFriar@lemm.ee 9 points 2 years ago* (last edited 2 years ago)

No, but the state is more used to these really outwardly repressive measures. So they use china like Guinea pigs, kinda. Because this slipped by in an article from three years ago most of us have never read on The Verge. If this happened in the US or Europe—well, if it happened in the US we’d have heard about it, people would’ve been angry for three days, and then we all would’ve moved on. If it had happened in Europe, they would’ve burned down the city it happened in. At least 1/3 would’ve had the proper response.

Ah, yes. I agree. Except that in the UK they would also roll over and accept it. France would already be on fire though.

They also make you smile to retract the suicide nets that line the building.
