I used to use Apollo daily. I'm so glad someone suggested that I set up this sublemmy as a backup. Loving lemmy and this community so far.

I restricted the subreddit to allow any guides etc to be available again, but such that no new content can be posted. If Reddit really goes back on their changes, I might public it again, but tbh that's unlikely.

I have been blown away by the amount of people that have already jumped ship, and joined this little community. Honestly had almost forgotten I had set this up. Glad to see you all here!

Edit: just to be clear, I was the mod of r/steamdeck_linux, not the larger r/steamdeck. It was a smaller, but more linux focused, subreddit.

Just got banned from r/SteamDeck for a single non-spammy comment linking here in a thread specifically about the blackout. Good riddance.

[-] shinnoodles@lemmy.world 20 points 2 years ago* (last edited 2 years ago)

A fair warning, it might be best to try and archive the content and transfer it over to Lemmg instead of leaving the subreddit itself up. Reddit seems to be forcibly reopening communities to stop the blackout, so if one doesn't act soon enough they might be forced out of their own subreddit and lose control.

[-] Moxvallix@sopuli.xyz 8 points 2 years ago

I would be down for that. Any suggestions as to how I could accomplish this?

[-] shinnoodles@lemmy.world 3 points 2 years ago

No, but I saw a few discussions and links mentioned elsewhere. I suggest trying to find someone more informed on the topic, I'm just trying to spread awareness on the craziness Reddit is trying to pull.

[-] therosesgrave@sopuli.xyz 2 points 2 years ago

Has reddit actually been reopening subs? Seems like r/videos would have been their first target, but that's still private.

[-] Dutczar@sopuli.xyz 13 points 2 years ago

This is one of the few communities I use lemmy for so far, the others are dying and I don't have time yet to post more on my own

[-] sunaurus@lemm.ee 31 points 2 years ago* (last edited 2 years ago)

I want to point out that Lemmy is actually super active right now, but unfortunately there is a bug in 0.17.4 that stops front pages from updating shortly after the server is restarted, thus resulting in "hot" showing very old posts for example.

I have fixed this issue on https://lemm.ee already, you can check our front page to see fresh posts. The fix will soon land in the main Lemmy codebase as well so other instances can take advantage, you can track the issue here: https://github.com/LemmyNet/lemmy/issues/3076

I have also advised other instance admins that regularly restarting their Lemmy server will work as a band-aid workaround until the proper fix is released, so some admins have already implemented this in order to get their post rankings working again (but unfortunately for you, it seems sopuli.xyz has not done this workaround yet).

[-] Moxvallix@sopuli.xyz 5 points 2 years ago

Ah, I was wondering why newer posts weren't showing up.

[-] ipkpjersi@lemmy.one 6 points 2 years ago* (last edited 2 years ago)

It is pretty unfortunate because that's a rather serious bug, it gives the impression that Lemmy is less active than it actually is which is not great for newer users unaware of the bug.

edit: I'm not sure if it applies to "active" or just "hot", still not great though.

edit 2: Apparently it does apply to "active" as well, interesting.

[-] Moxvallix@sopuli.xyz 4 points 2 years ago

Let's hope it's patched shortly.

[-] ipkpjersi@lemmy.one 4 points 2 years ago

Does it affect "active" or just "hot"?

[-] sunaurus@lemm.ee 5 points 2 years ago

It affects active as well unfortunately

[-] ipkpjersi@lemmy.one 3 points 2 years ago

I guess that's a good thing and a bad thing - it means Lemmy is really more active than it appears so that's good, but it's also a bad thing because the timing of this bug with so many new users is not good lol

[-] ash@sopuli.xyz 3 points 2 years ago

This is so cool; thank u for the hard work ❣️ I personally use the sopuli domain on jerboa app & sort by comment novelty so all's smooth sailings for me ⛵ ^•^ I sort it this way so I can contribute actively :))

[-] speff@melly.0x-ia.moe 2 points 2 years ago

Hey man, I appreciate the information - was wondering why the sorting was borked lately. I’ll keep an eye out for the update and occasionally restart my instance

[-] Gatsby@lemm.ee 2 points 2 years ago* (last edited 2 years ago)

It seems i chose my server... wisely

Edit: how can i donate to lemm.ee, i guess i should throw in my buck o' five.

[-] sunaurus@lemm.ee 1 points 2 years ago

Much appreciated! There are two options: either GitHub sponsorships or Ko-Fi.

[-] BenignLarency@lemmy.world 2 points 2 years ago

I KNEW IT!

Felt super weird seeing posts from over a day old, it's like they haven't changed.

[-] sunaurus@lemm.ee 13 points 2 years ago

Excellent decision, you have my full support 👍

[-] MattyXarope@lemmy.world 6 points 2 years ago* (last edited 2 years ago)

So to be clear, your a mod at the steam deck Reddit? I only ask because the community icon is different. I think they should be the same to make the transition easier.

[-] Moxvallix@sopuli.xyz 9 points 2 years ago

No no, I am the mod of r/steamdeck_linux.

[-] MattyXarope@lemmy.world 3 points 2 years ago

Ah ok, sorry about the confusion.

[-] Moxvallix@sopuli.xyz 4 points 2 years ago

Sorry as well, I should have made it more clear. I mean, the fact that I named this sublemmy steamdeck rather than steamdeck_linux makes it a bit confusing as well.

[-] tkk13909@sopuli.xyz 6 points 2 years ago

I haven't heard anyone call them sublemmys before. I think I like it!

[-] nii236@lemmy.jtmn.dev 5 points 2 years ago

Is steamdeck_linux a different community from steamdeck?

[-] Moxvallix@sopuli.xyz 10 points 2 years ago

Yes, this was r/steamdeck_linux's sister community, I set this up around the time I made r/steamdeck_linux .

The subreddit was more for focusing on helping people use the Linux side of the Steam Deck.

This community, however, can be more broad, but it's the reason there's a Tux in the icon.

[-] nii236@lemmy.jtmn.dev 2 points 2 years ago

So how is Linux on Steam Deck? Can I do all my devvy things? VSCode, Go, NPM, Docker, etc

[-] Moxvallix@sopuli.xyz 4 points 2 years ago

Yeah, for sure. You likely will want to unlock root, and disable read only fs, to do so, but its basically a modified Arch. You can even install other distros if you feel so inclined.

One thing to note is that SteamOS updates are known to break pacmans package db.

[-] rotopenguin@infosec.pub 1 points 2 years ago

You can stretch SteamOS's capabilities out a little bit, but I wouldn't get too serious about it. The OS partition(s) don't have a lot of space, everything gets bounced back to start with every OS upgrade, and between SteamOS upgrades its Arch signing keys get pretty badly out of date.

I dunno how long it takes for the Deck's particular drivers to upstream to "real distros". Arch may already be there, Debian is probably not.

[-] nii236@lemmy.jtmn.dev 1 points 2 years ago

Yeah I guess at a certain point (carrying keyboard mouse around with the Deck), you're better off just using a laptop

[-] WuOfficial@mastodon.social 0 points 2 years ago* (last edited 2 years ago)

@nii236 @rotopenguin

I don’t think so! I have an iclever portable keyboard that fits in my pocket even. Very portable companion to a device who’s purpose it to be “pocket” (more like small sling-bag) sized.

Link to the keyboard I use if curious: https://a.co/d/66lmyTl

[-] nii236@lemmy.jtmn.dev 1 points 2 years ago

Nice! I can dev on the toilet now

[-] nii236@lemmy.jtmn.dev 1 points 2 years ago

I'm a filthy Australian so I still can't buy it in stores here... :(

[-] petrescatraian@libranet.de 5 points 2 years ago

@Moxvallix thanks for taking care of all this

[-] Moxvallix@sopuli.xyz 7 points 2 years ago

no worries. its great to see the community is flourishing in a place that isnt reddit.

[-] petrescatraian@libranet.de 5 points 2 years ago

@Moxvallix yea, indeed. The Fediverse keeps surprising me as well 😁 guess that's what happens when people have choices.

[-] solberg 4 points 2 years ago

Cool! I hadn’t heard of the _linux sub, but I’m glad to see a Steam deck community on Lemmy.

[-] UprisingVoltage@feddit.it 3 points 2 years ago

I fully support this
