I wonder why? Is it just "people are nicer now", or are there environmental or socioeconomic factors at play here?

I think they elected a guy who threw a boatload of gang members in jail.

I'm not sure if anyone knows if all the gang members he locked up were actually in gangs yet.

Though, to be clear, El Salvador had a super horrific gang problem. The gangs were wildly murdering boatloads of people.

Yeah they’re undergoing extreme reforms on all sides. Basically improving social services while cracking down on gangs.

Now I have opinions here, as you said it doesn’t look like the most “human rights” focused crackdown, but I also don’t really see a way that this was going to change without either something like that or something like the everyday people essentially forming an anti gang gang

We are living in an age of unprecedented wealth, with millions entering the middle class every year. Homo sapiens live longer lifespans than ever before, with better nutrition, and better medicine than ever in our history. This is also the most peaceful time in our history, with record lows in crime and wars. The developing world is surging in wealth and in the west we have more opportunity and access to information than ever.
