"Microsoft's latest update breaks [some] VPNs and there's no fix [yet]"

Windows is getting worse and worse, but do we have to spin legitimate bugs as some nefarious plot?

[-] wander1236@sh.itjust.works 46 points 2 years ago

It's also very nice how this site tries to launch a new tab to ask to enable notifications.

[-] misspacific 20 points 2 years ago

click bait never changes or whatever.

[-] gomp@lemmy.ml 6 points 2 years ago

Windows is getting worse and worse

and so is the press :( websites and content creators enshittification is as bad as other companies (one could even argue they have been among the first to do that)

[-] FaceDeer@fedia.io 4 points 2 years ago

Too late, there's a little blood in the water so now everyone hates Microsoft and is pouncing on every drop they think they smell. Being part of an angry mob is fun!

Don't worry, in a couple of weeks or months some other big company or rich person will become the focus and everyone will forget about Microsoft again.

Sure there is, abandon Windows.

Sure there is, abandon Work.

I tried to turn in my buckets of thank yous at the bank but they didn't take em. Gonna be windows for now

[-] CaptObvious@literature.cafe 8 points 2 years ago

No, but at work it's someone else's problem. I'm so glad that my employer agreed to replace my Windows machine with a Mac.

[-] misspacific 6 points 2 years ago

yup. i'm tied to unreal engine 5.

(yes, i know there's a version for linux. i need to be on windows for the latest updates and work though.)

[-] refalo@programming.dev 3 points 2 years ago

Linux for VPN, VM for Windows :p

Because work usually does provide the computer and they don’t want you to tamper with it too much.

[-] delirious_owl@discuss.online 2 points 2 years ago

Just uninstall the OS. If you have physical access then must do what you need to do in order to be productive

[-] B0rax@feddit.de 4 points 2 years ago

Usually the uefi is locked and secure boot is enabled. You could even boot a different OS if you wanted.

[-] FutileRecipe@lemmy.world 1 points 2 years ago

then must do what you need to do in order to be productive

You clearly have not worked at most larger companies which have Acceptable Use Policies (AUP) which typically involves not modifying the PC and OS with threat of termination when (not if) discovered.

[-] YurkshireLad@lemmy.ca 4 points 2 years ago

Because the software we write has to run on windows and only windows. No Linux or wine or any other platform. It’s a fixed requirement from our client and unfortunately I don’t see that changing.

[-] milicent_bystandr@lemm.ee 2 points 2 years ago

Can't see the desk to write, and no indoor lighting

[-] Woozythebear@lemmy.world 5 points 2 years ago

There's no alternative, Linux doesn't meet my needs as a PC user so I'm stuck with windows.

[-] Eezyville@sh.itjust.works 4 points 2 years ago

I guess you'll have to accept your fate.

[-] mub@lemmy.ml 38 points 2 years ago

This seems like bullshit to me. I've not seen anyone complaining their VPN isn't working. And any business with staff using VPNs would not be happy if they managed to let that update get applied.

[-] Ballistic_86@lemmy.world 2 points 2 years ago

Running Windows 11, is updated, VPN works perfectly

[-] ulkesh@beehaw.org 14 points 2 years ago

Glad I dumped Windows in favor of an OS that doesn’t suck.

[-] refalo@programming.dev 1 points 2 years ago

works on my machine

[-] satanmat@lemmy.world 13 points 2 years ago

Okay quick question::

All vpns?

Or is there a list of affected v unaffected??

[-] cyrus@sopuli.xyz 3 points 2 years ago

The System's VPN imementation is broken. All of them are broken.

[-] wreckedcarzz@lemmy.world 13 points 2 years ago

So like, the 0 that use that implementation. Like really, IPsec? No openvpn support? No wireguard support? What is this, 2004?

[-] refalo@programming.dev 3 points 2 years ago

I used to live in an apartment with 4 other gay furries

Somehow I don't think you are the beacon of corporate experience here

[-] wreckedcarzz@lemmy.world 2 points 2 years ago

It's okay sweetie, you'll grow up some day :)

[-] realbadat@programming.dev 2 points 2 years ago
[-] twei@discuss.tchncs.de 1 points 2 years ago

tbh if you managed to buy into meraki you deserved it

anyways, look at this christmas tree out of meraki gear:

[-] realbadat@programming.dev 1 points 2 years ago

It's a crap platform, but it's the company's fault.

Just like the windows laptop.

[-] zod000@lemmy.ml 1 points 2 years ago

Our sister company had their VPN broken by this and we had to switch to another system. Even though it wasn't a particularly secure VPN (IPSec), the builtin Windows VPN was extremely reliable and convenience compared to shit like Pulse.

[-] CaptObvious@literature.cafe 4 points 2 years ago

In fairness, Surfshark appears still to work.

[-] Dyskolos@lemmy.zip 3 points 2 years ago

Don't trust every "article" on some shitty website.

[-] satanmat@lemmy.world 3 points 2 years ago

Well yeah. That’s kinda the point I was trying to make…

“It breaks VPNs!!”

Name one….

Oh yeah like a whole bUnCh!!!!!

Name….. one…

—- and in two articles I’ve seen they still have not named one. Great work there “journalists”

I'm running windows and my nordvpn still works. So maybe this article shouldn't even exist and the OP should lose all credibility when ti comes to anything technology related.

[-] Scary_le_Poo@beehaw.org 6 points 2 years ago

Vpns are working fine. This article is dogshit.

[-] interolivary@beehaw.org 3 points 2 years ago* (last edited 2 years ago)

So because VPN works for you, it's impossible for it to not work for literally anybody else?

[-] Scary_le_Poo@beehaw.org 1 points 2 years ago* (last edited 2 years ago)

I work for an MSP managing thousands of workstations and servers. I'm also the "VPN guy" so I deal with them constantly every single day.

Perhaps you should ask questions before making assumptions.

[-] electromage@lemm.ee 5 points 2 years ago

Wouldn't uninstalling the update fix it?

[-] nitneroc@lemmy.one 26 points 2 years ago

Wouldn't uninstalling windows fix it permanently?

[-] downpunxx@fedia.io 5 points 2 years ago

Has anyone here been running into this issue realtime since the update?

[-] TheProtector0034@feddit.nl 3 points 2 years ago

Tailscale still works here.
