Whipped cream & strawberries between fluffy slices of shokupan is highly underrated as dinner.

No thanks, I hate them, too much sugar :D

Seriously what the fuck

I will never eat a strawberry sando

It's impossible to tell what the other two are but the strawberry sandwich makes me scared

[-] cybervseas@lemmy.world 13 points 1 year ago

Never say never! Sweet sandwiches, especially ones with a slightly tart fruit like strawberry can be delicious. Please be open to trying even just a bite if the opportunity presents itself!

[-] Decide@programming.dev 4 points 1 year ago

Especially if it's free. Who would say no to free food?

[-] jeena@jemmy.jeena.net 4 points 1 year ago

I have no problem with strawberry jam sandwitches, but this just doesn't sit right.

[-] TaintLord9000@lemmy.world 3 points 1 year ago

Idk why people are so freaked out by it. It doesn’t seem that different from layer cake.

Top left: egg salad. Other one: butakatsu, aka deep fried pork cutlet

[-] metalingus@kbin.social 2 points 1 year ago

These three must be the standard/favorites across the board.

The few places that make these around me have the exact same ones.

[-] Marsupial@quokk.au 1 points 1 year ago

Japan calls sangas, sandos? Love it.

[-] WeDoTheWeirdStuff@kbin.social 1 points 1 year ago

It’s basically strawberry shortcake

[-] norbert@kbin.social 1 points 1 year ago

Think strawberry shortcake taste more than wonderbread and fruit. They're not bad, I much prefer a katsu sando but fruit is "ok."

[-] tiredofsametab@kbin.social 2 points 1 year ago

Yeah, I'm not a fan of the fruit/cream ones at all. The bread here is already largely sweet enough.

[-] stopthatgirl7@kbin.social 8 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

The downside of they only LOOK thick and full. They pad the very front, and the rest is basically bread. At least, the ones from the combini are.

[-] tiredofsametab@kbin.social 2 points 1 year ago

Depends on the store and the sandwich. Some katsu sandwiches are thick the whole way through, but also usually around 500 yen.

[-] stopthatgirl7@kbin.social 2 points 1 year ago

Yeah, and that’s why they’re ¥500. Lawson does have those thick katsu ones with the nice bread, but most conbini sandwiches in the plastic wrap like these are mostly cheap bread and false advertising.

these are from a place in bellevue wa that specializes in them.

and feiw have been all over europe & asia but japan is hands down my favorite place to visit ever.

tokyo is a monster of a great city ... foreign as you can get but amazingly easy to navigate.

very nice people, terrific food city with a really old beautiful culture.

all i can offer for advice is to not over think it. find a flight and hotel in your budget and just do it. guarantee you won't be disappointed ❤️

Sounds more like dessert than dinner to me. I'm sure it's delicious.

[-] angrylittlekitty@lemmy.one 4 points 1 year ago

wish i could argue with you but i cannot. despite being a nutrition dumpster fire, it was still delicious.

never thought i'd say this pre-covid: i sure missed business travel 🤣

[-] PussyXdestroyer69@lemmy.world 3 points 1 year ago

Egg salad, yes. Pork cutlet, hell yes.

Not at all interested in a strawberry sandwich though, thanks.

There’s a place here in PDX that makes a tonkatsu sando when I get the urge. Now if they only had onigiri folded in plastic with goma konbu filling…

I was thinking of Tanaka on the west side. Forgot about the OG!

[-] quicksand@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago

Wow I'm gonna have to try that. You mean at the airport or in Portland in general?

Furutsu Sando is delicious

I had these on my hike to Lake Serene, absolutely amazing after a long hike.

These sandwiches from Japan are one of the reasons I want to go lol.

I watched this video about the sandwiches a few years ago and come back to it every few months.

Whenever I go visit I plan to try as much as I can. It feels like a dumb goal but they look so good 😭

Oh wow that's wonderful! Thanks for sharing!

It's making me hungry even through the nausea I've been dealing with today lol.

It's amazing they were able to get it all to fit inside with all the cream added.
