Alienated (lemmygrad.ml)
submitted 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) by TeezyZeezy@lemmygrad.ml to c/comradeship@lemmygrad.ml

My friends haven't responded to any of my texts in the group chat (I asked when we should hang out next) other than one person who said "I ain't got the answers sway."

We haven't really hung out since I got out of rehab and I'm questioning whether or not they're my friends to be honest. They don't reach out or even respond when I do half the time and have greatly slashed our time together since I stopped using drugs. I can't tell if they're just busy and it's bad timing or if they're ditching me.

I'm very lonely and alienated from my community for being a communist and an ex-drug user. I don't live in a big city (Midwest USA) and so there's really nobody else for me to hang out with or find. Most people here are super right-wing and/or have different interests than me.

What to do other than relapse on heroin and die? Maybe I'm dramatic I just feel alone

I don't think you're being dramatic at all. That's a really tough situation. Are your friends all drug users? If you've recently stopped using drugs, losing some friends is a pretty common side effect.

Lots of people are feeling alienated, perpetually. It's just a consequence of how our society is laid out. I'm not saying this to downplay what you're going through, but to highlight that it's a problem lots of people struggle with, which means there are solutions out there.

Some people I know get a lot of socializing done through the web, where strong online communities can offset that sense of loneliness. I personally don't think that's the best solution, but you're here in lemmygrad. You have comrades that care.

More helpful would be to find some hobby groups. When I had to kick a drug habit, I spent a lot of time at game stores, getting involved in tabletop sessions. Maybe you have a hobby you could find a club for?

How important do you think it is to focus on the basics of society, for a moment? Figure out food, shelter, transportation, fun/social and sleep, for example. In which order to tackle sustainability in those areas?

Pretty important, I would say. Focusing on those areas can help alleviate feelings of helplessness or alienation as well. Is your basic security at risk here? Do you have shelter, income for food, etc?

I'm not the OP, I'm asking because I was never in a similar situation, so any advice coming from me would be sketchy at minimum, that's why I thought about asking.
