If content on the fediverse is federated and copied to local instances, then won't instances have to hold onto a forever increasing amount of data?

That is a solution, but it's not very reassuring when we're trying to replace "just add to the google search" reddit.
Like, hopefully useful stuff gets upvoted/bookmarked/favourited/whatever but what if it isn't?
