I know said yday that I was probably gonna just stay lurking but idk, I like the vibes here 😎

I'm on uni break atm but, for some reason, remembered today about the mandatory work placement/internship unit I have to do for my bachelor's. I probably won't be graduating before the first half of 2025, so I technically have until then to do it but still - suddenly stressed out lmao

Welcome! Switching from lurking to posting was one of the best decisions I ever made.

Whatcha studying?

[-] vanishing_spies@aussie.zone 3 points 1 year ago

I would type many a comment previously but discard it before posting haha but now I'm sorta like "why not?" I'm studying a bachelor of IT!

Smart cookie. At what uni? A lot of my students are also in the FIT and they bemoan how difficult it is and how mean the faculty is

I go to Deakin haha idk if it's good or bad (and I guess it doesn't matter), but I reckon it's pretty alright. What school are you with? I say with, I'm assuming not a student? I find mean faculty super unnecessary and that's a huge bummer for your students to have that experience

I work at Monash. My STEM students are always so taken aback with how chill we are in humanities. You need an extension? Take a couple of days. Need a mental health day? I’ll send you the materials you missed out in. In my personal, professional opinion, I’m here to give people an education and help them learn. I want them to succeed, not fail. If you’re failing or not coping, then I’m not doing my job properly.

I love your approach! If universities- no actually, if the world had more people like you it'd be a much better place. Your students are very lucky to have you.

I lurked for about 2 years on Reddit before posting.

I eventually went from active to lurker as the Facebook users piled and and they culture became less healthy.

I kinda wished I did the internship class my course had. Oh well. Hopefully you can finish asap!

[-] vanishing_spies@aussie.zone 2 points 1 year ago

I kind of like that it's mandatory to do it at this uni, but I also kind of wish I had finished my degree six years ago at the uni that didn't require an internship in order to graduate haha But I think that's just nervousness and anxiety talking because it certainly doesn't hurt doing one

[-] landsharkkidd@aussie.zone 2 points 1 year ago

It helps you build skills and such that are useful. I wish my course made it mandatory tbh.

Yay! The vibes here are nice, huh? I'm hopeful we can keep it up and keep attracting people like yourself to drop in and have a chat!

It's a double edged sword, the ol' placement/internship thing. Like, on the one hand you're giving free labour out and if you have a job that's not in that field it can mean time away without income. But without it you need the experience to get into the market. I hate that... I hate that we don't get paid for it. It's one of the reasons why I've decided not to pursue my Masters in Counselling. I get that you need the placement hours (especially for something like that), but given the way things are going economically at the moment, losing out on a month's worth of money in the long term isn't ideal.

[-] vanishing_spies@aussie.zone 1 points 1 year ago

Yeah exactly right about the double edged sword! I study online because I work full time in a low-paying, unrelated job that I couldn't quit in order to study full time because, yknow, the state of things currently lmao I'm lucky enough that my situation means I'll probably be OK doing an unpaid placement, but I know for sure alot of other students in my classes aren't in a similar position, and that really really sucks especially because it's a mandatory unit - it's not even something we're choosing to do to "get ahead" or something. But not pursuing your Masters, you totally get it. I hate that people need to make those sort of decisions based on financial reasons. Especially since alot of times, financial situations are too influenced by outside factors.
