MODERATORS
Video games. Even with how popular they are, it's not something easily brought up in a casual conversation. I hardly ever run into people my age who even play games. :/
I'm starting a new job tmrw and I said to my wife earlier that I really hope someone there plays video games like me so I can finally talk to someone about them in rl lmao
I've worked with call of duty/NBA2k normies for the past 3 years and I'd like to talk to someone about Baldurs Gate or some shit
Man I'm even farther into the weeds than that. I play shit like Satisfactory and Factorio. Subnautica is as "normie" as I get. Even among my friends, many of whom are avid gamers, I'm just alone. There are big communities around these games. Lots of people play Factorio. Never met one in person.
You haven’t met them in person because they are at home busy.. playing factorio.
The question is what are you doing outside?

I get it. I have some friends that are huge video gamers, but I play different games than them and it can be frustrating.
I'm 33 but most people I talk to in my regular life only play stuff like COD or 2k, maybe a big release here and there like God of War but that's it. Most people aren't playing indie shit or RPGs anyways
I'm not saying they aren't playing games. They play games, they just only play the most popular stuff and anything else is weirdo shit to them. I actually think I work with some of the most normal people in existence lol
It also generally isn't a primary hobby. It's something they do for like an hour at most at a time, specifically to kill time. You're not gonna discuss nuance and other, deeper things about gaming in general without having them glaze over.
Exactly true with it not being a primary hobby for most people who game.
When I was a kid gaming wasn't as widely considered as an acceptable hobby in general, but as a kid you just didn't care what grown ups thought (games make people violent anybody?). By the time I hit university, people got shamed for it by non-gamer peers and I did a computer science degree too so it wasn't a group of non-tech people who did the shaming either. By my early twenties I learned not to talk about it and just mention gaming as a hobby if asked and never elaborate further...
I'm a 34 year old game developer. I always get an "oh, that must be fun" then they move on. Like I'm a kid making toys instead of an adult making art for a living. It's like I said I was a YouTuber.

Absolutely. I play a huge variety of games and genres, I adore it as an art form, and love delving into the development and theory of it all.
