Unlike Gimp (that I appreciate too) Inkscape is an amazing no drama project.
Giimp+Inkscape+Scribus are the freedom trinity that I'll always support.
And if Dia hadn't died it'd be right there.
What's the drama with GIMP? I only know it took forever to port to GTK3.
As you have said, the amount of time the porting took.
A nothing burger to me but it was made pretty clear by others affected by US defaultism that the name is annoying to them.
The main thing: they were sitting on fat by FOSS standards contributions in crypto for years before finally doing something with the money.
Don't forget Krita
It's Inkscape, Krita, Scribus (and Blender) for me 😸
I'm not in the niche of Krita, Blender (iffy decisions lately tho), and Darktable but they're good projects too.

I'm hoping Graphite matures enough to add to that list as the FOSS motion graphics editor.
