Removing that PoS character from the movies was the single best thing Jackson did. Tom Bombadil is the fucking worst, I hate every single page that contains that obnoxious character.
While I wouldn't use such harsh words, removing Tom Bombadil was the most obvious decision in any adaptation of anything ever.
He is representative of concepts that are very important to Tolkien's setting and themes, though. I think it is also intentional that he has an unlikeable tone or doesn't quite fit in, in a weird way. It adds to his mystique.
