When i moved from my apartment to my house, i lined up the closing date to only have 2 weeks of overlap with my rent rather than a full month. I was able to use my work van to do multiple trips over the evenings to move my stuff and prep the house. This let me not take any time off work while minimizing double payments for housing.
I have friends where every time they move they get all their stuff out on their last day into a uhaul, sleep in the truck or motel, and move into their new place the next day so they never have to double up a rent payment. If the unit you're moving to is empty most landlords will let you get your stuff there a few days earlier.
