Its pretty easy for a publisher to promise you things and do essentially nothing and take a massive cut of your work.
So if your going that path, find one that really matches you and vet it by asking other game makers under their banner what they think of them.
If you make content about the game you are building. Interesting choices your making aimed at your ideal player. And lead people to a coming soon page so they can get on a mailing list as your game approaches that's ideal. You'll generally convert 4% of your email list on a game launch. It can be higher if you engage your audience.
If you do this, when a publisher comes along, you can show them the work you've done. Understand how hard the marketing effort is and make decisions based on that.
Yes its a brand new skill, but if you can do it on your own your golden. And you can negotiate a better cut when you get to a phase where it's eating too much of your efforts and choose a publisher.
Either way it comes down to you making content.
Thanks so much — this is super useful. I'll definitely vet any publisher carefully and try to build up my own audience too. Really appreciate you taking the time to write this out!
All good. Good luck with your game.
thanks!
