That would be sick. I'm sure someone in the SCA has tried. I just know that some very real technique is on display in that scene with Wesley and Inigo.

I know, right? Well worth doing. Wish my fencing club was half that cool. ETA that was a while ago, but so was the movie.

Kudos to SCA for being the first place your mind goes to...

Was in for several years. Fenced with rapier and cape. I wasn't bad either. I miss it sometimes, but life is too busy, SCA participation is both time and money intensive.

Been meaning to pick up a rapier, pretty much the ideal bladed weapon. Foil plus edge. We had sabre, which was funsies after fencing practice.

Cape as defensive? If so, how does that work?

It's a short, like shoulder cape, two layers heavyish fabric with a little bit of weight on the bottom. Mine had soft rope the length of the bottom seam sewn into it. I was taught to hold it by the collar seam and you can use it to deflect or sometimes even capture your opponent's sword. It can also be waved around, kinda figure eight like, as a distraction tactic. I suppose you could throw it at your opponent, but then you have no off-hand tool. It was a lot of fun. The SCA is a hobby full of hobbies. The more stuff you do the more gear you need and DIY is how you get most of it, but you're also surrounded by folks who do all the stuff you're doing.

Edit: I drew you a bad picture

Thank you Sir, I get the picture (boom boom). Nice, it's what I expected, but more, maybe even why superheroes have capes (thinking Incredibles seamstress 'No Capes'). Now I want one with lead weights on the bottom, but friends don't let friends wear capes (back in my goth days, but hey they're past, fuck it). I get the principle, thanks so much for indulging me.

I feel like there was a rule that the weight had to be soft for our purposes, safety first of course, but I'd be shocked if exactly what you propose was never done. I could see stringing up some fishing sinkers to sew in. Still flexible, but it would become a striking weapon as well as a defensive tool. Thank you for allowing me to nerd at you.

Thank you for allowing me to nerd at you.

So much welcome, been a privilege!

I feel like I read about the weights somewhere.
