MODERATORS
They were all healthy folks in the prime of life.
They'd all lived in the wilderness before.
Lewis had been trained as a doctor before leaving.
They used local guides, who knew the routes, dangers and resources they might encounter.
Two good stories.
We know exactly where they stopped because Lewis would dose the men with mercury, and we can detect the latrines where they passed mercury laden stool.
The captains took along enough liquor to get the men drunk until they were too far from civilization to turn back.
