By and large it worked for most of them.
Sure a few at the top got pinched but at the time a functioning Germany was more important to the west so they could face off against the Soviets.
You don't get a functioning country by purging the entire civil service so lots of Nazis kept their head down and were fine.
Hell some of the scientists came to the US and were the head of the Apollo program.
