I was fairly sure that Alex was just pretending he didn't know what the Crystal Maze is, but I looked anyway and found this quote from a 2015 interview:

I'd say the Crystal Maze [was an influence], that's a good starting point. I used to work in Big Brother in the third series, I was a logger, which was the worst of all jobs, you had to sit and watch what happens and type it into a computer.
