"Less cognitively capable than previous generations" sounds like kids are getting dumber, but...

Gen Z is the first generation in modern history to score lower on standardized tests than the previous one.

... just does not mean that. Many factors influence test scores, like say, more people growing up in poverty.

This article reads like fortune magazine enjoying their own farts.

Also, standardized tests are stupid. So much relies on the quality of education. The tests do not provide a baseline.

The tests are like read this basic paragraph, answer a question about it. People are genuinely and absurdly stupid and your argument is “the test is wrong.” Could tests be better? Always. Are they revealing something deeply uncomfortable about our fellow humans? Without a doubt.

Here’s a fun fact for you. More often than not, the average person gets this question wrong:

“What is half of 1?”

I work in this industry. It’s bad. There’s so many reasons. Shit like iPads, which were expertly marketed by Apple despite having zero educational utility, are certainly part of the problem.

Watching some hapless kid using his Apple pencil (which is almost out of battery) to write an equation with huge ugly handwriting that takes up half the screen on a licensed app is positively enraging.

I second guessed myself. Like this was one of those meme quizzes worded to kinda trick you

If you answered 1/2, 0.5, one half, you’re probably above the mean.

People usually say stuff like: 1, 0, I don’t know, and 2. It makes no sense whatsoever.
