The convent likely belongs to an outside group that exerts control over it. There were crackdowns in the middle ages on convents because some tried to turn into lesbian communes with Jesus.
No it is owned by the nuns. They recently sold some property because it was too much for a handful of oldies to maintain.
Also, we're not living in the middle ages anymore.
