I believe it was planned before Trump won a second term, so there was an assumption we would have more time, and it was chosen due to it being the end date of the UAW's contracts, so other unions could make theirs renew on the same date, making a mass strike 'legal' and avoiding the taft heartly act.
I am hoping they move that date up and instead perform a wildcat strike instead, but we'll see.
There is General strike US as an alternative.
