One of the definitions of clip from Merriam-Webster is literally: "a magazine from which ammunition is fed into the chamber of a firearm", so you no longer need to make a distinction between clip and magazine because only gun nerds actually give a shit. English is fluid, we understood what OP meant.
It's about as esoteric a difference as some cars taking diesel and some taking gasoline. Most people know both exist and what they're for, I don't know if I'd call that expertise but I suppose it's slightly above novice. Maybe general gun awareness? In either case your point stands, not everyone can be assumed to be even generally gun aware.
I'll be that guy. If I know someone's car takes diesel and I hear them talk about putting gas in it, I'm gonna make sure they mean diesel. Putting diesel in a gas car is a good way to waste a tank of fuel. Putting gas in a diesel car is a good way to waste a diesel engine.
My read on the whole thing is there is a group of us who are just sick of hearing, because we don't care, it's immaterial.
It's been 20 years people have been beating that into our heads. When I came into this comment section, I was literally looking for this particular squabble and I was surprised to have not found it but here we are eventually.
It's one of the most irritating aktchewallys because it will not seem to go away.
Yeah I know it’s pedantic and I’m not a gun nut by any stretch. But here’s an example. If you were to call a trackball a mouse. They functionally do the same thing and most people would realize what you were talking about in context. But to a computer nerd, they are not the same thing.
These chuckle-fucks are not qualified by any stretch of the word. No self respecting person that has actually had gun training would act like this. It’s stupid, unsafe, unprofessional, and just makes them look like idiots which I’m guessing most are. So if you want to make fun of them and be effective to the gun nuts, it helps to use the appropriate terminology. And we need the gun nuts to realize how dangerous and unprofessional these gravy seals are.
Thats all I was trying to convey. Sorry if I came off like an asshole. I wasn’t trying to be.
It’s a magazine, not a clip.

there's no reason for everyone to be a gun expert.

It is more like knowing the difference between a CVT and dual clutch transmission. A clip or magazine is just something that holds bullets for a gun.
that's more like saying "I'm low on gas", and someone berating me saying "your car uses diesel not gasoline.!!!"
Yes, exactly that. That was entirely my point.

Language is descriptive, not prescriptive.
As long as you understand what the word means, and it doesn't matter if it's technically distinct, then it's fine.
Modern weapons don't use clips, so unless we're talking about historical weapons, it doesn't matter.
You should know, Bill.
Everyone loves it when a pedant speaks up.
I don't.
"we used to read TIME on em, and playboy was the golden standard"
The clip goes in the magazine.
