It’s not necessarily being sycophantic here, it’s just not pushing ragebait for engagement.
The second most engaging strategy is pushing only content one agrees with, from people in one's circles (aka an echo chamber), but this suggests tumblr is breaking out of that too and their algorithm is more interest based. It wouldn’t have linked the transphobic people to their posts otherwise.
…In other words, this is approximately what algorithms should be.
The great thing about Tumblr is the lack of an algorithm. That doesn't say there's none, but the main page is chronologically sorted from all my followers. I have to actively go to another tab to see the "For You" algorithm.
