Maybe it could be interpreted as the player character not really understanding as a 10 year old? Like what Prof Oak meant was "there are 151 known pokemon in this region, go learn what you can" but what Red heard was "there are exactly 151 types of pokemon in the world, go take pictures of each one and your magic iPad will automatically learn everything and give you a fun blurb about them."
Like it was really just a fun homeschool kid project in an extremely safe world, "go sightseeing for a bit, and once you know the basics about animals, come back and I'll teach you the details," but the kid assumes "I'm the very best like no one ever was. All of biology is up to me now"
